The wonderful old man Judge and our girl Rory Phillips taking out 1st in there first 90cm round together. How great it is to see these two out kicking goals together. Great coaching from our dear friend Elsa Vigneau getting them ready. Elsa knows judge inside and out as she did retrain him off the track for many years after his retirement from racing.
What great girls and what a great horse, the old man just keeps going and giving! 👏👏👏👏👏👏

Some horses test your patience. Some test your ability.

Dare tested both.

When we bought Dare to Deviate as an unbroken three-year-old, it didn’t take long to realise he was something special.

In fact, the moment that sold us was watching him stand in a paddock when a clap of thunder rang out. From a standing start he launched sideways, clearing a barbed wire fence with ease.

It wasn’t exactly the safest sales demonstration…

…but it certainly showed he could jump!

From that day on we knew he had all the athletic ability in the world.

The challenge was never his talent.

It was his mind.

Dare has always been an incredibly sensitive horse. His anxiety often got the better of him, and over the years he’s challenged every rider who’s sat on him. There were times when it would have been easy to give up, but there was always something about him that made us believe he was worth the effort.

Then along came our great friend Jess Somerfield from Wildfire Equestrian.

Jess understood him.

Through endless patience, consistency and horsemanship, she’s transformed him into the horse we always believed he could become. His dressage has improved out of sight, while his naturally scopey jump has never stopped taking our breath away.

And, let’s be honest…

He’s pretty hard to miss.

With his striking blue eyes, bold white markings and movie-star looks, Dare has built quite the following wherever he goes.

A few weekends ago at Denman, Jess and Dare completed what will likely be their final 1* and they’re now ready to step into the exciting world of 2* and beyond Eventing.

That’s a milestone we’re incredibly proud of.

Not because it came quickly…

But because it didn’t.

This partnership is proof that success isn’t always about finding the easiest horse. Sometimes it’s about finding the right person for the horse.

Jess, thank you for believing in Dare, for putting in the work and for bringing out the very best in him.

We’re incredibly proud of you both, and we can’t wait to see where this journey takes you next. Bring on Onyx Parks first FEI horse 🐎

Every now and then, a horse comes along that makes you smile every time you sit in the saddle.

Meet Bear.

About 12 months ago we were searching Australia for our next young event horse. After making enquiries and having several promising horses fail vet checks, it turned out the horse we were looking for had been right under our nose the whole time.

He was standing in the paddock of our good friends Charlie and Kaden at Blue Gum Performance.

They had just broken him in.

One ride was all it took.

Bear is by the outstanding Cassiago, and from the very beginning he showed all the qualities you hope for in a young horse—a phenomenal jump, incredible athleticism, a trainable mind and an attitude that makes every ride enjoyable.

Over the past 12 months we’ve had the privilege of producing him here at Onyx Park Stables, slowly building the foundations and giving him the education every young horse deserves.

When the time came to take the next step, there was only one person we wanted in the saddle.

Our great friend and coach, Andrew Barnett.

Andrew is one of Australia’s most respected event riders, and after riding Bear… well… he hasn’t exactly been in a hurry to give him back!

A few weekends ago, the pair headed to their first One Day Event together.

Like all young horses, things didn’t quite go to plan. During the dressage test, kangaroos decided to make an appearance, followed by children chasing them across the venue. Not exactly the ideal introduction to competition for a four-year-old!

Despite the unexpected distractions, Bear held himself together (almost) to score over 60% in the dressage before showing exactly what we already knew in the jumping phases.

His jump is something pretty special.

Power, scope, carefulness and a genuine love for the job.

He’s only just turned four years old, so there is still an enormous amount of learning ahead of him, but it’s hard not to get excited about what the future might hold.

We’re incredibly proud of the horse he’s becoming and grateful to Charlie and Kaden for giving us the opportunity to buy him, and to Andrew for continuing his education.

We can’t wait to see what the next chapter brings.

Watch this space… we have a feeling Bear is only just getting started. 💙🐴

The horses that leave the biggest mark aren’t always the ones with the biggest ribbons. Sometimes they’re the ones that change lives. ❤️

Meet Judge.

Judge raced in the country until he was 8½ years old before retiring sound and going on to work as a lead pony at the track. We were actually there to look at another horse, but one look at Judge standing in the yards and we were sold. We bought him without even sitting on him.

It turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

Our great friend Elsa gave Judge his second career, retraining him from an off-the-track Thoroughbred into an eventer, taking him all the way to Eventing 1* before handing the reins over to Torin.

From there, Judge became Torin’s teacher. He took him through the grades and taught me what eventing was really about. If you’ve ever ridden a horse that gave you confidence, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

He was a cross-country Ferrari… Torin and Judge had their plan for a Melbourne start, and things were going well.

Around two years ago, disaster struck. During the cross-country phase he tore a hamstring from the bone early on course. In true Judge fashion, he had absolutely no intention of stopping and was convinced he could finish the course jumping on three legs. It took a fair bit of convincing that his day was over!

Thankfully, after a long recovery, and to our shock, Judge has another chapter to his story.

Now, at almost 20 years old, he’s teaching another young rider the ropes.

Rory, who many of you know from helping out around Onyx Park Stables, has taken Judge under her wing, and the pair have become a fantastic team. This weekend they competed in two show jumping classes, taking home two first places!

The best part of the story?

Rory’s coach is Elsa… the very same person who first retrained Judge all those years ago.

Life has a funny way of coming full circle.

We’re incredibly proud of Judge. Not because of the ribbons he’s won, but because, nearly 20 years on, he’s still doing what great horses do best—teaching, inspiring and looking after the next generation.

Some horses never stop giving.

Congratulations Rory and Judge. We couldn’t be happier for you both. 💙🐴

What a weekend for the Onyx Park Stables team! 🐴

Sometimes the best part of producing quality horses is standing on the sidelines and watching others enjoy the ride.

This weekend we’ve seen one of our much-loved retirees prove that age is just a number, a young superstar announce himself in style at his very first event, and one of the quirkiest (and most talented!) horses in the stable take another exciting step towards the upper levels of the sport.

The weirdest part, neither Barb or Torin were in the saddle.

Watching horses we’ve produced and developed continue to thrive with talented riders is what it’s all about. It’s a real credit to the riders, owners and everyone involved in their journey.

Over the next few days we’ll be sharing each of these stories individually—and trust us, they’re worth following.
