Ticks are on the prowl!

With the influx of tick paralysis cases we would like to remind everyone to keep their pets up to date with prevention.

Not only do ticks carry diseases that infect both animals and humans, the paralysis tick can cause life threatening paralysis in our furry friends.

Signs of tick Paralysis include:
Lethargy
Reduced appetite
Occasional vomiting
Vomiting
A change in the bark/meow's sound.
Cannot blink.
Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing. Heavy breathing can occur; this can involve panting, noisy breathing, grunting, and coughing.
Change in heart rhythm or rate.
Excessive drooling.
Wobbly gait, which often starts with the hind legs.
Reluctant to move, stand, or jump.
Completely paralysed.

We will be closed on Wednesday for the EKKA show holiday and will re-open at 8am on Thursday. If your pet is unwell while we are unavailable we recommend the Pet ER at Stafford or Animal Emergency Services at Underwood.

As many of you will be aware, H5N1 bird flu has been identified in a number of wild birds in WA, SA and NSW in the last few weeks. While Queensland currently remains free of the disease it is important that we be aware of the possibility of an outbreak so that our wildlife, livestock, pet birds and community stay safe.

What is H5N1 bird flu?
A highly contagious viral disease primarily affecting wild birds and poultry which can spread rapidly.

What are the signs?
Birds may show respiratory signs such as difficulty breathing or gasping; lethargy; neurological signs including twisted neck, tremors, inability to stand or fly.

What should you do if you see an unwell bird?

AVOID - do not touch or approach sick or dead wild birds
- keep pets and children well away from sick birds

RECORD - take a photo or short video if possible
- note exact location

REPORT - immediately report unusual illness or multiple deaths to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888

EASTER OPENING HOURS: Please note, we will be closed from Friday April 3rd - Monday April 6th for the Easter break.
