Using play and group dynamics to help build confidence in Theo and Monty for interacting and playing with other dogs and confidence in being in the rain.

I love seeing the transformation in this dog during this session. I look forward to seeing his confidence grow. Monty has fear based reactivity to dogs and whilst his owner has worked on this following our 1 on 1 sessions he is mostly good on walks now except when dogs are very close to him or walking head to head with him on the footpath. This stuff if hard to get past working with random dogs on the street because there is only a few seconds of exposure to the other dog and then they are gone. Monty needed a longer time to work through his fear and to set up the scenario using dogs that would ignore him but stay close enough so he could work through it. Each session we will slowly add more dogs as he gets more comfortable.
I do not advise this approach for every dog, each dog is unique and what worked for this dog wouldn’t work necessarily for other dogs and could backfire. This has been done after the owner used counter conditioning to get him this far because he used to lunge at dogs from a much greater distance away from them.

I’m really happy with Leo’s progress. He used to be a dog with virtually no food motivation and now his engagement level is high and he works hard for food rewards. He is too intense for most dogs to handle with his play and he is reactive to dogs in that he is desperate to get to them wanting to play with every dog he sees. So the program for him at the farm has been to work on building handler engagement, work on being neutral to dogs outside of a play situation, to learn how to socialise appropriately at various levels of arousal depending on the other dogs he is socialising with and also allowing him to go all out playing with other well matched dogs occasionally. Because he gets his fix to play with dogs at the farm his owner has reported that his reactivity on walks has become much less. He knows the different context situations so on lead walks = no socialising with other dogs. He has a few friends he plays with at the farm and outside of there and beyond that we work on engagement with his owner and calm.
