🚽Straining to urinate or constantly visiting the litter tray
If your cat is repeatedly going to the litter tray, straining, crying while trying to urinate, or producing little to no urine, seek veterinary attention immediately. A urinary blockage is a life-threatening emergency, particularly in male cats, and can deteriorate rapidly.
🍽️ Suddenly refusing food
A cat that stops eating isn’t simply being “fussy.” Loss of appetite can occur with dental pain, nausea, kidney disease, infections, gastrointestinal problems and many other conditions. Cats that go without food can also develop hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease), so a significant or sudden loss of appetite should be taken seriously
🙈 Suddenly hiding or acting completely different
Cats often hide signs of pain and illness. If your normally social cat suddenly hides, becomes unusually quiet, stops grooming, seems weak, reacts differently when touched, or simply seems “not quite right,” don’t ignore it. Behavioural changes can be one of the earliest clues that your cat is unwell.
👁️ Sudden changes to the eyes
Cloudiness, redness, swelling, a suddenly enlarged or very small pupil, unequal pupils, squinting, discharge, or suddenly bumping into things can indicate a painful or serious eye problem. Some eye conditions can cause permanent damage to vision if treatment is delayed.
😮💨 Open-mouth breathing or obvious difficulty breathing
Cats normally breathe quietly through their nose. Panting, open-mouth breathing, rapid breathing, exaggerated chest or abdominal movements, or sitting with the neck stretched out can indicate respiratory distress. This is an emergency — seek veterinary care straight away.
