Balancing Baby Blaze 🐾

Blaze is a small young blue girl who had not made it through race training and came into foster care to transition into life as a pet. After arriving on transport, it quickly became clear that something was not quite right. She leaned against my leg with one paw raised, but without support she stumbled and fell.

At first we considered dehydration, motion sickness from travel, lack of food, vertigo, or a similar issue. We took her home to settle her and begin hydration. The first 24 to 48 hours were the hardest, as there were no clear answers. When she lifted her head, her foot would lift too, causing her to lose balance and fall. Her ears were also badly packed with dirt, so they were cleaned in hoping it was a possible cause.

Over the next few days, Blaze continued to stumble and hold her head to the side. Concerns included ear infection, vestibular disease, brain trauma, whiplash from transport, neck issues (although no pain symptoms), or a vertigo-type condition. With balance exercises and neurological work, she slowly improved. Her cognitive function seemed fine. She could problem-solve and complete treat puzzles, although a subtle balance issue remained.

A vet consult was arranged. Her ears, eyes, skeletal system, and bloodwork were checked. The results showed some discrepancies but no clear cause. More debris was found deep in her ear canal and cleaned out. She was prescribed ear drops and Vitamin B supplements to support brain health, with a recheck booked for two weeks later.

Still a mystery, but not affecting her happy disposition. Without a brain scan, the most likely explanation is a brain imbalance, vertigo-type condition, or recovery from vestibular disease with some remaining balance issues.

Blaze is now safe, settled, and loved. She will join the Lakeview Greys and live out her life as a much-loved pet, continuing to grow in confidence in the comfort and stability of her forever home🐾
