There’s nothing better than seeing a rescue animal safe, loved and finally home!

We've had some amazing adoption updates recently and they made us so happy that we couldn't wait to share them with you too.

Happy homes, happy hearts 🐾💚

Wimbledon is a sweet, playful 3 year old boy whose name was inspired by his love (and we mean looove) of tennis balls 🎾🐾

He's looking for the perfect home to continue his training, share adventures, play fetch and most importantly… snuggle!

Our supporter Mel recently took him on a Doggy Day Out adventure and shared with us how sweet he is:

“This gorgeous little man LOVES his tennis balls and knows how to snuggle up. With a little bit of time and effort, I think he would learn very quickly! I dare you not to fall in love with the complete package that is Wimbledon 🫶”

Because Wimbledon has a lot of playful energy and is still learning, he would be best suited to a home with teenage kids as the only dog, so he can soak up all the love, care and attention he deserves.

If you have an unlimited supply of tennis balls, that would be a plus 😛

This happy, special boy is ready for his next chapter! Could you help him find it?

Happy Volunteer Appreciation Week! 💙

We are unbelievably lucky to have almost 300 volunteers and foster carers supporting AWL in so many ways and we simply couldn’t do what we do without them!

Our CEO Jodi wanted to say a very special thank you to every single one of you on behalf of everyone here at AWL and of course, all of the animals you help us impact 🐾

You are amazing! 🥹

Weave a dog lead with volunteer Wendy!🐾

This Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’re celebrating all the different ways our incredible volunteers make a difference for the animals and people in our community.

For Wendy, that includes so many things from welcoming people to our Wingfield shelter with her signature smile and fun trousers to playing music and singing to our shy cats!

It also includes using her creativity and care to handmake dog leads.

Last year she kindly sat down and filmed the process so you can DIY your own.

Follow Wendy’s step-by-step guide and share your creations with us! awl.org.au/blog/diy-dog-leash

Thank you Wendy and thank you to all of our amazing volunteers, for your generous support of AWL 💙

Meet Connor 💙👋

Connor joined AWL as a volunteer in 2023 and has become a much-loved part of our Wingfield team.

Every week, Connor helps with laundry, supports our team and spends some quality time hanging out with our cats helping with their enrichment and socialisation - one of his favourite parts of the day.

Since joining AWL, Connor has grown in confidence, built new skills and become a valued part of our community.

This Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’re celebrating Connor, and the almost 300 volunteers and foster carers who help us make a difference for animals and people across SA every single day.

Thank you Connor! And thank you to every AWL volunteer and foster carer - your kindness, time and care doesn't go unnoticed.

We couldn't do this without you lending a helping paw 🐾

Our Doggy Day Out program gives our pups a much needed break from the shelter and a chance to explore new adventures!

It helps build confidence, supports socialisation and gives them a chance to soak up all the love (and hugs) they can get.

Here's some cutie snaps from recent participants 📸🐾

Thank you to our incredible community for taking the time out of your days to give shelter dogs an amazing day, it makes such a difference to their lives and we're so grateful for your support,

Doggy Day Out has been so popular that we're booked out for a couple of months but you can learn more and explore others ways to get involved at awl.org.au/doggydayout 💙

Our Chief Veterinarian Dr Michelle knows better than most just how special dogs like Bugalugs can be, after adopting her own wire-haired hound through AWL a few years ago 💙

Bugalugs is very smart and full of personality. He might be a big boy in size but he’s still only young and learning about the world, which means he needs ongoing training and guidance.

He’s struggling with shelter life and urgently needs a patient, experienced home where he can continue learning and have the chance to properly settle in to the loving life he deserves 😭

Visit awl.org.au/adopt/274836 to read all about Bugalugs and where he will thrive! 🐾

Help him find his special person by sharing his story and reaching more South Aussies.

We had the honour of supporting Jane as she said goodbye to her beloved horse, Flex 🤍

Flex’s final journey was exactly as it should be - dignified, personal and full of love. Jane brought him in his horse float, in his usual spot, giving him one last ride back to the farm. A quiet, powerful moment our team won’t forget.

Jane has trusted AWL Aftercare with many of her pets over the years, including Flex’s stable mate Maverick in 2022. It was a privilege to support her again.

One part of his farewell carried a beautiful tradition. When Flex passed, a silver coin was placed on his eye - a symbolic “payment to the ferryman” an ancient gesture to guide the journey ahead. We honoured this wish and returned the coin to Jane after his cremation, ensuring every detail was respected.

We know these moments matter. The rituals, the memories, the meaning behind them.

As the only organisation in South Australia with a dedicated equine cremation chamber, we’re able to support horses like Flex with the same level of care, dignity and respect we give every animal in our care.

At AWL Aftercare, we’re here to help honour your pet’s legacy in a way that feels right for you.

Flex’s final send-off was beautiful, meaningful and deeply moving for our team. We’re so grateful to have been part of it 🪽🐴
