Allergies 🌼🐾
Allergies and hypersensitivities are a disorder of the immune system. The immune system in pets is designed to defend the body against harmful pathogens. However, in our allergic pets, after exposure to certain stimuli or substances, the immune system overreacts, producing an undesirable immune response to certain allergens that would be considered harmless in a non-allergic animal. This allergic response, or hypersensitivity, can manifest as itchy, red and inflamed skin.

The are four common allergic skin diseases that our pets can be diagnosed with are:

Flea Allergy Dermatitis, Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Allergy and Food Allergy.

Clinical signs for each of these diseases can be very similar and sometimes there can be an overlap of diseases, where your pet may have two concurrent allergies, for example Flea Allergic Dermatitis as well as Atopic Dermatitis.

Our practice offers a range of over the counter products to help manage allergies, including the Prime 100 range, which features allergy-friendly diets and dermcare products for skin-related allergies including Aloveen oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. These are a great place to start before starting on prescription options. A grain free diet & avoiding chicken and beef is beneficial for many dogs suffering allergies. World vet day high lights this year Veterinarians critical role in ensuring food safety, food security and public health.

World Veterinarian Day is on 25 April, recognising and celebrating the vital contributions veterinarians make to animal health, public health and environmental safety.

Many people picture veterinarians only in clinical settings- but their work extends far beyond the vet clinic.

At major agricultural events, such as the Sydney Royal Easter Show, veterinarians play a critical role behind the scenes. They manage, inspect and treat animals across a wide range of species, including competing horses, birds, dogs and livestock - overseeing animal welfare, conducting daily health checks, and providing emergency care when needed.

This year, our Chief Veterinary Officer, Jo Coombe, attended veterinary rounds at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, highlighting the importance of having veterinarians on site to protect animal wellbeing and maintain safe, high welfare events.

"I was honoured to be invited to attend veterinary rounds at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show," said Dr Coombe.

"There was an impressive depth and breadth of veterinary expertise at the show, meaning that the health and welfare of the animals at the show is very well covered."
