As the weather warms up, snakes are becoming more active and may be out and about earlier than usual. Already this Spring there have been an influx of reported sightings of snakes in backyards and sunning themselves on popular pathways.
So as every minute counts, the question is do you know what to do if you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake?
What you can do;
• Keep your pet as calm and still as possible.
• Carry them if you can, minimising movement.
• Contact your closest 24 hour emergency veterinary hospital immediately and head straight there.
• Do not wait for symptoms to appear, snake bites can be life threatening, even if your pet initially seems fine.
It’s important to know Vetcall does not carry snake antivenom, so if you suspect a bite, please contact your nearest emergency vet ASAP!
A little preparation can make all the difference in an emergency. Save your nearest emergency vet’s number in your phone now, you never know when you might need it.
A little extra preparation 👉🏻If you regularly walk your dog along bush trails, creek paths or nature reserves, consider carrying an elastic compression bandage, it may be useful if you know how to apply it correctly, but the technique depends on the bite location. Keep your pet still and seek emergency veterinary care immediately!
Snakes rarely bite unless they feel threatened, startled or are defending themselves. Give them plenty of space, keep your dog close on walks, and never attempt to approach or handle a snake. Keeping your distance helps keep both you and your pets safe. 💛
