The time has come…the time none of us thought would ever come. Dr Alex is turning in his badge and scalpel and retiring. For those who are new to the hospital, a little history - Dr Alex started the bird vet as a sole vet, doing house calls and working out of rooms at Maroubra vet hospital in 1996. This quickly grew into a multi-vet practice in Waterloo, and then into the 7 vet, multi-storey hospital as it stands today. Alex’s Bird Vet was the first exclusively bird and exotic pet vet hospital in Sydney, and one of the first in Australia. For a long while, it was the biggest in the southern hemisphere.

Dr Alex helped pioneer a level of care for our avian and other unusual pet species in Australia that has made it possible for them to get the same level of care as other domestic pets do. During this time he has also helped educate pet owners and the overall pet industry as to the proper care that these animals deserve and helped improve their welfare immeasurably.

Dr Alex has trained so many young vets and nurses over the years, and has being doing so for so long that some of these vets and nurses aren’t so young anymore either! This has also helped shaped the landscape of exotic vet care and his legacy will continue through these many many people who have benefitted from his kindness, experience and knowledge. There will be a lot fewer bike tyre marks on the floors, spilled coffee, and stray chocolate wrappers around the hospital. It’s going to take some getting used to.

We would also like to wish the best to the indescribably awesome Birgit. While her efforts are often behind the scenes, this hospital would not exist without her. Birgit is our operations manager and looks after the staff and she has been the spark that has kept this practice running forever.

Everyone wishes Alex and Birgit the very best for their future travels and adventures. We are all the richer for having had you lead us for so long. The exciting future ahead for the clinic is only possible because of the solid foundations you have laid. From all of the staff, present and past, we wanted to say thank you.

𝑰𝑴𝑷𝑶𝑹𝑻𝑨𝑵𝑻 𝑨𝑵𝑵𝑶𝑼𝑵𝑪𝑬𝑴𝑬𝑵𝑻 𝑭𝑶𝑹 𝑨𝑳𝑳 𝑶𝑼𝑹 𝑪𝑳𝑰𝑬𝑵𝑻𝑺! 📢

In August, Bird & Exotics Veterinarian will move to its next stage of evolution. The Unusual Pet Vets have purchased the practice and will be the new owners from August 6th 2024. Dr Alex’s last day will be August 2nd 2024.

𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝑫𝒓 𝑨𝒍𝒆𝒙 (𝒐𝒘𝒏𝒆𝒓 & 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒗𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏)
After 28 years of owning this bird and exotics veterinary service, I will be retiring to our place in the Southern Tablelands. There I will continue to spend time regenerating the flora on our property for the enjoyment of the local native animals.

The same familiar faces will still be at the practice. There will be a name change for the clinic but most of the staff, both veterinary and nursing, will be retained. Doctors Tegan, Sang, Rebecca, Savannah, Shelby and Kirby will all still be here to continue looking after all our loved clients and cherished pets. All my staff are amazing and I will miss them greatly.

I would also love to thank all my amazing clients who have been with me for many years and for allowing me the pleasure of helping them to look after all their wonderful animals.

As a teenager I dreamt of having a bird and exotics vet hospital where you could take your anything that was “not dogs and cats” and have them treated just the same as dogs and cats. I am proud to be the founder of one of the first - and at one stage the largest - stand alone purpose built bird and exotics vet hospitals in Australia. It has grown from a one person vet practice to now having 6 associate vets working alongside me.

I will miss all my clients and patients, many of whom I see as friends, but I know the vet hospital is in safe hands with excellent new owners and with my brilliant staff here to look after our furry, feathered and scaled friends.

Further announcements will come for what the future entails.

Thank you for all the memories,

Alex

Handsome boys Calamity and Meli came in for a check up today and you bet they were showered with lots of attention with many coo coos shared! 🐦

A few weeks ago a juvie gull came in unwell and Dr Tegan discovered a fishing hook stuck in his crop on x-rays! After stabilisation, he underwent surgery to remove the hook from his crop (ingluviotomy).
This is a reminder to please don’t leave fishing equipment lying around and if you find a bird with fishing line coming out of their mouth, don’t cut the line and contact your local vet or wildlife rescue for advice and treatment!
