Snake season is officially here! ☀️
Meet Hannah, the Dalmatian, who has recovered well after suffering a snake bite! We’re so happy to hear that Hannah is back on her paws and her story is a timely reminder of just how important it is to recognise the signs of a snake bite and seek urgent veterinary care. ❤
Signs of a possible snake bite in pets include:
▪ Vomiting
▪ Dilated pupils
▪ Wobbliness, weakness or difficulty walking
▪ Collapse
▪ Excessive drooling or salivation
▪ Tremors or shaking
▪ Difficulty breathing
▪ Pale gums
⚠️ Beware of a “false recovery.” Your pet may appear to improve after collapsing, but this can be short-lived, and their condition may deteriorate rapidly. Even if they seem to recover, urgent veterinary attention is essential.
🐕 When walking your dogs, try to avoid long grass, wetlands and other areas where snakes may be hiding. Keep them close and stay alert, especially on warmer days.
🐈 Cats with outdoor access, keep a close eye on them, too. Snake bites can go unnoticed and cats may not show obvious signs until hours or even days later.
🚨 If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, have seen them interacting with one or notice any of the symptoms above, seek emergency veterinary care immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to develop or for your pet to get worse.
