📚Training Tip Tuesday

🐾 Want your puppy to focus on you when the world gets exciting?

Start by building engagement before you need it.

Your puppy won't automatically know how to tune out distractions. We need to teach them that interacting with us is valuable, even when there's something else happening around them.

Here's where to start:

🐾 Build engagement through play and food.

🐾 Reward your puppy for checking in with you.

🐾 Give them opportunities to choose to engage, rather than constantly asking for their attention.

🐾 Practise in different environments, gradually increasing distractions as they become more confident.

The goal isn't for your puppy to ignore everything around them.

It's for them to notice the world, feel comfortable in it, and learn that they can disengage from what's happening and reconnect with you.

That foundation helps build a dog who can navigate different environments without needing to interact with everything they see.

And remember, if your puppy is struggling to engage, the environment may be too distracting. Make it easier before expecting too much. 🐾

Follow along to find out why you should skip the walk and what to do instead!

DAY TRAIN PROGRAM

A full day dedicated to helping your dog learn, practise and progress.

Our Day Train Program provides personalised training throughout the day, with sessions tailored to your dog’s individual goals and needs.

Whether you’re working on obedience, engagement, loose lead walking, recall, confidence or specific behaviour goals, we’ll build a training program around your dog.

What’s included:

🎯 Tailored training sessions throughout the day

🧠 Focused learning and development without overwhelming your dog

📝 A personalised written training plan

🎥 Video tutorials so you know how to continue the exercises at home

📹 Video snippets from your dog’s training sessions

🐕 Structured social time with other Day Train dogs, where suitable

Designed for ongoing progress

Day Train is designed as an ongoing training program, rather than a one-off training day. While a single day can introduce new skills and give you valuable direction, meaningful and lasting behaviour change takes time, repetition and consistency.

Regular Day Train sessions allow us to progressively build on your dog’s skills, increase difficulty as they improve and adapt their training as their needs change.

And importantly, the training doesn’t stop when your dog goes home. We give you the tools, understanding and practical guidance to continue building those skills together at home.

📅 Available Thursdays

💰 $130 per day

Spaces are limited to ensure each dog receives personalised attention throughout the day.

🧠MYTH vs FACT

MYTH: My dog ignores me off-leash because they’re stubborn.

FACT: Your recall just hasn’t been properly proofed

Is your dog brilliant at recall at home… but suddenly “forgets” their name at the park? 😂

They’re probably not being stubborn.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is giving dogs too much freedom off-leash before their recall is ready for the level of distraction around them.

Recall isn’t just about teaching your dog to come when called. It needs to be built up gradually and proofed around distractions, so your dog learns that coming back to you is still worth it when there are exciting things happening around them.

If your dog’s recall falls apart at the park, you’re definitely not alone. 🐾

Stay tuned for one of the simple games I use to start building a stronger recall.

🐾Client Win Wednesday

Meet Geronimo!

When we started working together, Geronimo was easily excited when out and about, pulled on lead, and wasn’t particularly interested in bringing his toy back during play.

We’ve been working on:
🐾 Engagement — rewarding him for choosing to engage with us
🐾 Leash skills — using the lead to block unwanted behaviour and teaching loose lead walking as a skill
🐾 Toy play — building value in tug and using it to make retrieving more rewarding

And we’ve had a fun breakthrough 👏

By incorporating tug into our fetch game, there’s now more value in bringing the toy back. Geronimo is starting to actively want to return the toy to us, rather than us having to chase him down for it!

It’s a great example of how changing the way we play can change the way our dogs engage with us.

Keep it up, Geronimo! 🐾

🧸 New tug toys have arrived!

We’ve added the Round/Flat French Linen Tugs from Beefy to our training gear and they’re a great little toy for building play and engagement with your dog.

Why we like them:

🐾 Soft French linen that’s easy for dogs to grip

🐾 Compact and easy to hide in your pocket

🐾 A great size for medium breeds

🐾 Great for retrieving and tug games

🐾 Perfect for using during obedience training

🐾 Strong handle and stitching for interactive play

Tug isn’t just about having fun, play can be a great way to build engagement, strengthen your relationship and give your dog an outlet for their natural drive.

We’ll be using these in our training sessions, and they’re now available to purchase from Empowered K9.

📍 Available at Empowered K9

💲39.99

(These are interactive tug toys and should be used under supervision. They’re not designed to be left with your dog to chew on.)
