If you are sensing seething rage radiating from Grace and Fergus today, one could understand why! It was vet day for them both πŸ‘

Poor little Fergie had his castration day. It truly is a horrible thing to have to have get done to someone, to have a body part removed, but it's the only way for him to live a safe and happy Sanctuary life. He actually handled the day so well and is completely unfazed. Pain management and relief is always used and Ferg is back to his VERY mischievous self

Gracie has deformed hooves due to neglect before rescue. We actually cannot trim them properly with snips alone because they are so hard and thick, and she gets so very stressed. The vet lightly sedated her so we could get her little feetsies in good order and improve her hoof health. This will likely be something that needs to be done once or twice per year. Gracie is a little sore but doing well

Any support towards Fergus and Graces vet bill is so appreciated https://shearexistencesanctuary.org/

Wormy and lice treatment day today for the OG flock and Meep Meep is proclaiming to the entire shire what a horrible goblin I am!

It was honestly just luck that I was able to catch her instead of committing the betrayal of plucking her off the perch at night for her treatment, but some days you win some. Meepy is a chickens chicken, not a humans chicken, and that's totally fine. Living here comes with no expectations on the animals and there is certainly no demand that they like or love us

Meepy is now rage scratching at the ground and storming around after her treatment but sometimes that's the cost of keeping them healthy and safe

Meep Meep arrived almost 3 years ago and was reported to be 7 years old (I cannot confirm that). She and her sisters roosted in a tree at night until they disappeared from her world one by one and she was alone. Her humans then sort her a home and here she is πŸ–€

Penny's patience was impressive because I swear Church was taking his sweet time intentionally...We can't blame him because life with a Puppy isn't always easy when you're a chonky little cat

Sweet Magnus, we are so sorry we were too late 🌈

Oh how sick you were. Laying flat on your side, as soon as I picked you up and your little head flopped over my shoulder, I knew things were not good, I wondered if you would even make the 30 minute trip home, but you did...

No matter how grim things seem, we will always try if it's the kindest thing, and as hard as we fought, you rallied harder little Magnus, but your weakened body had simply endured too much.

Magnus' little body was overwhelmed with a barbers pole parasite burden, a blood sucking worm that if left untreated is fatal. Magnus was so aneamic that there was no colour remaining in his gums or eyelids, they were white. He was painfully thin and in addition he had pneumonia. With treatment and nursing, he lifted a little and managed to eat a little grass and drink down some electrolytes, even nodding his little chin at us when he wanted more.

As the night rolled on, Magnus started to become weaker, slowly fading, then going to sleep and not waking again. Sometimes all you can offer is a safe and warm place to pass, but he deserved his life. He had meds, water, a comfy bed and love until he left us in the very wee hours of the morning. His body now rests in the earth, some of the big crew came to say fair well, and we can only hope his spirit is in a far kinder realm ✨

We have the power to end the suffering of innocent animals simply by leaving them off of our plates

Light your candles, say your prayers, send strength and love. Whatever it is you do when someone needs a miracle, now is the time for this little man!

We just picked him up and we are fighting with him! He is weak and in a very bad way with a prognosis as guarded as you can get πŸ˜”

We just purchased him (and future babies in need) this pen with your donations, Thank you for helping us to help him ❀️

Thank you!!...it doesn't seem to cut it but I'll say it any way because I just don't really know how to express the incredibly wonderful impact you have had!!

To those of you who contributed to raising around $3000 for us after my last post which I just threw out there in a moment of vulnerability and despair, I am so grateful. I felt like a silly goose afterwards but the cavalry rolled in and helped our little Sanctuary power on for another day and reminded me that there is indeed strength in vulnerability

If you donated, shared, followed us, commented or tagged someone, together we are a community of mostly strangers working together with incredible outcomes for animals. It's inspiring and moving to see such collective compassion in action from this end ❀️

We also welcomed 3 new regular donors. While we really needed funds to get by now and I paid some haunting bills that have been spooking us, being a monthly or weekly donor is the single most powerful way to gift any charity like ours with security. Small, affordable, maintainable amounts that won't cause our donors and community any hardship is our long term goal. Lots of people donating $1 still supports the animals as much as one person donating a packet. If this is something you are interested in, head to our website https://shearexistencesanctuary.org/πŸ₯°

I have had lots more thoughts which I will likely share as I gradually work my way back from this low point, and to being more present here in a meaningful way, but for now, I just want you to know, that you have moved me and helped us beyond what I could have ever hoped, So truly, from the bottom of my busted and smooshed heart THANK YOU!

We are a Sanctuary in crisis!
Not the kind of crisis where something big, loud and catastrophic happens. But the slow burn and grinding down from trying, struggling, failing and not quitting for days and weeks and months and years on end!

I have really really tried. I have created websites and patreons. Created reels that disappear into the abiss far more entertaining material than I have the time, energy or skillset to create. This might sound like a pitty party, and I guess it is, but it's also the truth and reality of trying to care for animals that most people view as food. Actually I'd argue that it's the truth for many people trying to care for animals of any species

We are a registered charity and not for profit, and we are a service that the community utilises. We can be very easily found when someone has an animal crisis they require assistance with but seem to be invisible when it comes to social media and financial support. I know this is because I need to do better and be more consistent, but I have nothing else to give. I work and work to pay for the animals care (which is fine), and work a lot extra to make sure we can try to save something towards buying our own property because we have been squatting on Jeremy's Aunties property for 4 years thanks to her incredible generosity

We are not alone! Animal rescues everywhere are suffering and closing down, I will fight to the death before that's us (as I'm sure most of them did). We promised these animals safety and I'll go out swinging before I break that promise, but we are mentally unwell and chronicly burnt out

What do we need? I've been asked that before quiet a bit. The unpolished and uncouth truth is that we need money...more money than I can earn that's for sure. Because everything animals require costs money (other than love and respect which I possess in infinite amounts). Vets cost money, food cost money, shelters cost money, fencing cost money, supplements, meds and minerals cost money...I could go on but I think I've bored you enough with my on and on-ness!

So what's the point of this rant? Well I promised myself I would have some dignity and not do one of these doom and gloom posts again, that I'd just work harder to keep things going, but I'm having a bad run and a sooky morning so I'm here breaking that promise...
So maybe the point is, an urgent and honest request for support from 2 people who have sacrificed almost everything and still wholeheartedly believe in their mission despite being in the gutter right now

One off donations help us now, a reoccurring donation helps us a little each week or month (even $1), sharing one of our posts from the last 7 years helps us to be seen. Being seen helps us accomplish both of our goals. To share the individual and collective stories of the animals we encounter, and to gather enough support to care for them in the way they deserve

https://shearexistencesanctuary.org/

If you have stayed this long, thank you. I know it's an emotional dump and I apologise if you didn't have capacity. I just couldn't take pretending anymore

If you support us or have ever supported us, thank you! You are the reason we are still here fighting ❀️

If you are an Animal rescuer or Vollie, I see you and I appreciate you πŸ’•

We are experiencing a really decent amount of rain this weekend. In preparation, Jem set about dismantling and moving this shelter from the Goats paddock to the Special needs pen. Despite not having used this Shelter in a millennium, Gandalf obviously took initial offence before assisting by giving pointers

During the last downpour our 3 special needs sheep, Leila, Forest and Leo would not go into either of their 2 shelters and stayed out looking miserable in the rain, it has been muddy, and understandably they did not want to go through the muck, so we are trying to make sure they can bunker down safe and dry this round

Fun Fact! This shelter is the first shelter we had for the Sanctuary. We built it when we had just 2 sheep in care, Snowy and Susan, using pallets and recycled iron and only expected it to last a short while. Well over 7 years later, it lives on, solid as a rock. Why the pallets haven't rotten away is a mystery, but this old bad boy has kept many a baby dry πŸ’•

**Driving home from a long day of work when the phone rings**
πŸ“±"Hey Ange, I have a Lamb here, I think they must have lost their Mother, it looks a bit crook"

I am not proud to say, that after this phone call from a farmer where I played it totally cool and said, "yep, I'll just feed my animals and I'll be there", that I had a complete and total meltdown. "We have no space, we have no money, I can't take anyone else right now", and then I drove to pick her up... because she deserves it and is worthy of help, as are we all!

I messaged Leah from Free Spirits Sheep Sanctuary knowing she was in no better situation to help, and yet help me she did anyway. "We will work together", because we have always made a pretty mean team!

I scooped this little lady up, she was limp and cold, I knew her prospects were slim to say the least, and then I drove straight to Free Spirits. We assessed and administered meds, we warmed her hypothermic little body and we hoped for a miracle that never came. She faded away comfortable by a warm fire, seen and loved

The suspected culprit? The deadly barbers pole...a blood sucking roundworm and a common cause of illness and death in sheep without adequate parasite management. This little lady's death and suffering was preventable however, that's difficult when one has hundreds of sheep for commodifiable purposes, individual care just isn't a priority

Many will say that this life of running a Sanctuary is their dream, and maybe it once was one for me. While it is a blessing to spend each day with such magnificent individuals, and I do not regret a thing because it's my purpose, I cannot tell you how hard it is to exist in a world when you see so much suffering and death of innocents, no matter how hard you try. Where living beings are treated like less than nothing because it's common to eat them and use them.
I dream of a world where Sanctuaries only exist to help the sick and injured of free living animals, because we no longer exploit and abuse, and I will always work towards that. But the reality is, that at this point, it's only a dream!

"In a world that is often harsh and unkind, may compassion be your quiet rebellion"

Rest easy little one
