WHAT YOU SEE VS WHAT I SEE AS A DOG WALKER
You might just see a quiet neighbourhood…
But behind the scenes, there’s a lot more going on.
What might look to you like just a normal walk, to me its constantly analysing the environment, the dog’s body language, and what is happening around us.
Things I’m looking out for:
• How is the dog I’m walking acting in this environment?
• How likely are they to become overwhelmed or reactive in certain situations?
• Where is the quickest safe exit if we need to leave quickly?
• If another dog approaches, is there somewhere safe to move or cross the road fast?
• Are there distractions or situations that I should avoid?
This can include avoiding certain houses, roads, intersections, or areas depending on the dog and what they are comfortable with, as well as situations they may be more likely to react to.
A walk can involve:
• Watching traffic and tricky intersections
• Keeping an eye out for other dogs, including dogs off-lead
• Choosing calmer routes
• Changing direction when needed
A big part of my job isn’t just walking it’s reading situations, making decisions, and keeping both the dog and myself safe. A walk isn’t just about getting from A to B. It’s about making sure your dog is secure, comfortable, enjoys their time outside, and is kept SAFE along the way.
