Lions Assistance Dogs

Lions Assistance Dogs Lions Assistance Dogs provides highly trained Assistance Dogs Australia-wide free of charge.

Each Hearing Assistance Dog costs ALHD upwards of $37,000 to train, deliver and support, and is gifted free of charge, to its deaf or hard of hearing new owner. One in six Australians has some form of hearing loss, with this number expected to rise to one in four by 2050. Severe or profound hearing loss currently affects close to 400,000 people. Whilst hearing loss impacts all ages, the numbers ar

e greater in older Australians. The impact of hearing loss varies for each individual and Australian Lions Hearing Dogs works with each recipient to create a solution that fits them. Many people who wear hearing aids or use assistive technology are unable to depend on these aids in difficult circumstances or after they go to bed. A Hearing Assistance Dog is often a welcome aid for many who suffer from hearing loss or deafness as it provides the companionship they crave in a socially isolated environment, and the safety and security from common dangers around the home. Hearing Assistance Dogs not only increase the quality of day-to-day living, they also help alleviate many of the conditions often associated with deafness and hard of hearing, these being depression, anxiety and communication withdrawal. As reported through a recent Federal Government Senate Inquiry into hearing, these conditions have been shown to contribute to cognitive decline and potentially increase by a factor of five, the likelihood of developing dementia. It’s not just the recipients themselves whose lives are enhanced by their Hearing Assistance Dog, there are also many reported benefits for family, friends and community.

Last week we bid farewell to beautiful Border Terrier 'Kayla' as she began her journey as a Hearing Assistance Dog. 🧡

Kayla was proudly sponsored by Bob and the Lions Club of Marion, whose generous support helped make this journey possible. We hope they all enjoyed following Kayla’s progress every step of the way. 🦁

We’re also incredibly grateful to Bronte, who raised Kayla through our Puppy Program. Bronte’s care, commitment, and training gave Kayla the best start, helping her grow into the capable and confident Assistance Dog she is today. Kayla is Bronte’s 9th puppy he has raised for us so it’s no surprise she was in expert hands from the beginning. 💙

We’re so proud of the progress Kayla has made and look forward to seeing the incredible difference she will bring to her new recipient’s life. 🐾

We’re thrilled to share that ‘Jojo’ has officially passed her Public Access Test and Sound Assessment, meaning she is now a fully accredited Hearing Assistance Dog! 🧡

Jojo is now fully ready to support her recipient every day by alerting to important household and environmental sounds, providing greater safety, confidence, and independence both at home and in the community.

A special thank you to the Upper Coomera Lions Club, who played a vital role during Jojo’s follow-up period. Their continued support helped Jojo settle beautifully into her new home and strengthen her sound work in real-world environments. 🦁

Congratulations to Jojo, her recipient, and everyone who’s been part of her journey — from her early days in training through to this incredible achievement. Another wonderful partnership made possible through your support. 🐾

Meet the newest kid on the block – Johnny! 🧡

Johnny is a gorgeous Border Terrier who has just begun his full-time Assistance Dog training, where he will be learning the advanced skills needed to one day change someone’s life. 🐾

A heartfelt thank you goes to Faye, Robert, and Sydney for their generous sponsorship and for naming Johnny. Johnny is named in honour of the late John Chate, a fellow Lion who served for many years and also sat on our board. His legacy now lives on through Johnny. 🦁

We’d also like to thank Johnny's puppy carers, first Nick who played such an important role in his early life and then Gordon and Jacqui who completed Johnny's final months in the puppy program, From providing daily love and care, to guiding him through vital socialisation and early training, together they have given Johnny the very best start. 💙

Gordon and Jacqui will continue to look after Johnny in our Bed and Breakfast program. Dropping him off and picking him up four days a week whilst giving him the continued support and love at home 🐾
