πŸͺ° πŸͺ± GIVE BOTS THE BOOT πŸͺ± πŸͺ°

This is your annual PSA to choose the correct worming treatment suitable for this time of year

In Autumn, we recommend the use of Moxidectin, as it is affective for both
πŸͺ± Encysted Strongyles -a dangerous and damaging life stage of the strongyle larvae
πŸͺ° Bot Larvae - Bots are in fact a fly, not a worm, and although not particularly harmful, can cause discomfort in large numbers

This case presented with symptoms typical of gastric ulceration and upon scoping was found to have a significant Bot infestation- although the owner diligently treated for worms, she was not aware that the product used did not contain a boticide

If you would like to learn more about bots, here is a useful article

Today on Mother's Day, we pay tribute to all mothers of the two-legged and four-legged variety. We extend our sincerest gratitude to the mums on our staff who dedicate their time to patient care, often sacrificing precious family moments. We also celebrate all the wonderful broodmares, recipient mares and nannies πŸ¦„πŸ₯°πŸ’–

The 25th of April was International Vet Day!

We love our vets so we celebrated today with a clinic’s favourite things… snacks! πŸŽ‚ 🍰 πŸ₯

Vets are pretty amazing humans- the countless hours they put in caring for our pets, researching after hours, writing reports, the sleepless nights, counseling owners, mentoring each other and the support staff… the laughs, the tears, the highs and the lows.

It is such a demanding job but their dedication to their patients is unwavering. We are so lucky to have our vets- past and present- and we thank you all!

Have a Golden Oldie?

Autumn is the perfect time to check for endocrine diseases that may be affecting your horses health and longevity. The most common condition we test for is Equine Cushings Disease, also known as PPID (Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction)

Here are some facts and fictions about PPID

🍁 FACT - Equine Cushings Disease is not the same as Equine Metabolic Syndrome. Although we often test for both at the same time, Cushings is an endocrine disorder relating to increased hormone (ACTH) release, whereas EMS is characterised by insulin dysregulation
🍁 FACT - Cushings is most commonly diagnosed in horses over 15yrs but cases in younger horses are seen. 20-25% of horses over 15yrs are affected
🍁 FALSE - All horses with Cushings have hairy coats. Actually, only about 15% of horses show the classic clinical signs of a long coat with delayed shedding, loss of top line and condition, lethargy, and increased water intake and urination
🍁 FACT - your horse’s immune system will be suppressed by Cushings, making them more susceptible to illness, skin problems, dental disease, ongoing laminitis and other conditions that could decrease longevity
🍁 FALSE - Your horse is old so there’s no point treating him for Cushings. There is! Correct treatment of Cushings can give your horse a new lease on life, increase his lifespan by years and improve athletic performance
🍁 FACT - Testing for, and treating Cushings has become very manageable! A simple blood test to check levels of ACTH is all it takes to diagnose, and there are multiple methods of treatment including a daily liquid or tablet, or a weekly injection
🍁 FACT - Autumn is the best time to do a blood test for Cushings, as there is typically a natural seasonal rise in ACTH levels at this time of year, allowing for more accurate and sensitive diagnosing

If you would like more information about Equine Cushings, or to book your horse in for some diagnostics, please contact our team on 97965800

πŸ₯‚πŸΎ Magic Millions 2026 πŸ₯‚πŸΎ

Congratulations to our local thoroughbred studs for their fantastic results from the recent yearling sale!

The sleepless nights, midnight foal deliveries, after-hours vet calls, x-rays, airway scopes and the rest of the very long list of jobs involved in getting these babies ready for their big debut are worth it when that hammer falls.

Special congratulations go to Greenfields Lodge for their exciting $360k sale of this ripper c**t, and for being the second highest selling vendor for the sale- a huge achievement!

We thank you all for allowing us to service your top quality studs, and we are proud to offer these young racehorses the very best in veterinary care to give them the best start possible.

We hope you all enjoy a little break now before the next foaling season begins!
