Keeping Our Pets Protected from Paralysis Ticks;

August saw a jump in pets presenting to our clinic affected by paralysis ticks. Warmer, wetter conditions create the humid environment ticks need to survive and become more active.

Paralysis ticks attach to pets and release a toxin that affects the nervous system. Early signs can include weakness or wobbliness, vomiting or gagging, a changed bark or meow, difficulty swallowing and unusual breathing. Without urgent treatment, this can progress to complete paralysis, respiratory failure and death.

The heartbreaking reality is that many cases are preventable with consistent, year-round tick protection.

Urban and suburban pets are still at risk. Ticks can be carried into backyards by wildlife, while pets may be exposed on beach access tracks, bush trails, parklands, acreage properties, camping trips or when visiting friends and family. A pet does not need to live in the bush to pick up a paralysis tick.

Keep your pet’s prevention up to date, use the correct product for their species and weight, and regularly check their entire body—especially around the head, neck, ears and between the toes.

If your pet shows weakness, a voice change, difficulty swallowing or unusual breathing, contact a veterinarian immediately.

🐾 Welcome Dr Anneke Kalwy 🐾

Slightly overdue and alittle weird because she is such a solid part of our Vet team already!

Dr Anneke graduated from James Cook University in 2025 before relocating from Townsville to Hervey Bay to join the Nissen Street Vet team. She arrived with a strong and broad clinical foundation, developed through experience across companion-animal, mixed and rural veterinary settings.

Anneke’s clinical experience spans consultations, diagnostic investigations, internal medicine, anaesthesia, dentistry, emergency and hospital care, and a variety of surgical cases. Her exposure across small and large animals has helped develop her adaptability, practical confidence and ability to approach unfamiliar cases with a calm and considered mindset.

Anneke has a keen interest in both medicine and surgery and particularly enjoys cases that require careful investigation, clinical reasoning and ongoing patient management. She takes a thorough and methodical approach, looking beyond the immediate symptoms to understand the complete clinical picture and determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Despite being relatively early in her veterinary career, Anneke has demonstrated a level of clinical maturity, capability and composure beyond what would ordinarily be expected. She is thoughtful in her decision-making, communicates clearly with clients and works closely with the broader veterinary and nursing team to provide consistent, high-quality care.

Anneke previously worked as a Veterinary Science Tutor at James Cook University, reflecting both her strong academic foundation and her ability to communicate complex information clearly. This experience continues to support the way she explains conditions and treatment options to clients, helping them feel informed and confident in the care of their pets.

Since joining Nissen Street Vet, Anneke has enjoyed getting to know the many wonderful patients and clients of Hervey Bay and becoming part of the local community.

Outside the clinic, Anneke enjoys spending time with her partner and their Kelpie, Nora. She is always finding new games, walks and adventures to keep Nora entertained - and Nora makes sure there is never a dull moment!

🐾 International Cat Day 🐾

Today we celebrate the special bond we share with our feline companions and the comfort, joy and unmistakable personality they bring to our lives.

It’s also an important reminder to champion their health and welfare through regular veterinary checks, appropriate vaccinations, parasite prevention, desexing, good nutrition and dental care.

Cats are experts at hiding illness, so subtle changes in appetite, drinking, toileting, grooming or behaviour should never be ignored.

With H5N1 bird flu detected in wild birds in Australia, pet owners and the general public are encouraged to understand the risks, and recognise what to avoid and know what to do if they encounter an unwell wild bird.

While it mainly affects birds, cats and dogs can become infected through contact with - or eating - sick or dead wildlife.

Please take a few minutes to listen to this important update from AVA President Dr Diana Barker. A little awareness now can help reduce the spread and keep our pets, wildlife and community safe.
