Rethinking Lunging: A Tool for Balance, Not Just Energy

The act of lunging often gets bad press but I personally think it is a tool in the tool box that can be used to help the horse if performed in a way to help and not hinder.

💭What does “lunge” really mean?
The word comes from the French allonge — “to lengthen.” That’s the essence of lunging: giving the horse space to lengthen, balance, and explore posture.

👀Why I Lunge Horses
I often ask to see horses lunged during assessments. It reveals how they move in each direction, highlighting issues that aren’t always obvious in a straight line.

⚖️ Balance Before Impulsion
The biggest mistake I see is pushing horses forward too much. This drives them onto the forehand, bracing with their head and neck, and counter-bending to stay upright.
- Horses in this state won’t stretch — they don’t feel safe.
- Training aids often add to the brace rather than solve it.

By slowing the trot, the horse can find balance, feel secure, and begin to lengthen naturally. Only once balance is established should impulsion be introduced.

⭕ Circle Size Matters
Small circles make balance harder and increase uneven load through the musculoskeletal system.
- I often travel the arena alongside Elmo, mixing straight lines with gentle bends.
- Smaller circles are used briefly to encourage the inside hind to step under, then we return to larger circles to let that energy flow.

Constant small circles = higher risk of injury. Varying circle size = healthier, more engaged movement.

🐎💨 Lunging Is Not Just “Burning Energy”
Too often lunging is used to tire a horse out. But chasing them around only triggers cortisol and adrenaline, pushing them into flight mode.
- Flight mode = braced posture, misalignment, and higher injury risk.
- Adrenaline masks fatigue, making injury even more likely.

For lunging to build posture and stretch, the horse must first find calmness.

🚶 It’s Okay to Walk
Lunging doesn’t have to mean going fast. Horses should feel safe to walk, trot, and canter without fear. If your horse rushes as soon as you start, go back to basics — show them lunging is about communication, not punishment.

🩹Consider the Horse in Front of You
Every horse is different. Age, fitness level, past injuries, or current ailments all affect how they can move and balance.
- A young, fit horse may benefit from more variety and impulsion.
- An older horse or one recovering from injury may need slower work, larger circles, and more walking.
- Fitness and confidence should be built gradually, always respecting the horse’s limits.

Lunging should never be a “one size fits all” exercise — it’s about meeting the horse where they are today.

⏳ Less Is More
Another key factor is time. Lunging doesn’t need to last long to be effective.
- Short, focused sessions help the horse stay mentally engaged and physically safe.
- Long, repetitive lunging can strain joints, increase fatigue, and undo the benefits of balance work.
- Think quality over quantity: 10 minutes of mindful lunging is often more valuable than 30 minutes of chasing.

✨ Final Thought
Lunging, when done with balance, calmness, and variation, becomes a powerful tool for developing posture and connection. A horse in good form wants to explore good posture — our job is to create the conditions for that.

Touch Over Tools: Fascia Knows the Difference

In bodywork, tools can assist — but they cannot replace the intelligence, sensitivity, or neurological impact of human touch.
Hands-on work communicates with the body in ways no device or instrument can.

1. Hands Provide Real-Time Feedback Tools Cannot Match

Your hands sense:
• tissue temperature
• hydration and viscosity
• fascial glide
• subtle resistance
• breath changes
• micro-guarding
• nervous-system shifts

This information shapes your pressure, angle, and pace.
Tools apply pressure — hands interpret and respond.

2. The Nervous System Responds Uniquely to Human Touch

Skin and fascia contain mechanoreceptors that respond strongly to:
• sustained contact
• warmth
• contour
• slow, intentional pressure

Human touch activates pathways that:
• quiet the sympathetic system
• reduce pain signaling
• soften protective muscle tone
• improve movement organization

Tools stimulate tissue.
Hands regulate the nervous system.

3. The Effect of Physical Contact Itself

Physical contact changes physiology — even before technique begins.

Touch triggers:
• lowered cortisol
• increased oxytocin
• improved emotional regulation
• better proprioception
• reduced defensive tension

Horses and dogs — whose social systems rely on grooming, leaning, and affiliative touch — respond especially deeply.
Tools can compress tissue, but they cannot create that neurochemical shift.

4. Hands Follow Structure; Tools Push Through It

Fascia does not run in straight lines — it spirals, blends, suspends, and wraps.

Hands can:
• contour around curves
• follow the subtle direction of ease
• melt into tissue instead of forcing through it

Tools often pull or scrape in a linear path, bypassing the subtleties that create real, lasting change.

5. Tools Can Override the Body’s Natural Limits

Hands feel when:
• tissue meets its natural barrier
• the nervous system hesitates
• a micro-release initiates
• the body shifts direction or depth

Tools can overpower these boundaries, creating irritation, rebound tension, or compensation patterns.
Hands work with the body’s pacing — not against it.

6. Hands Support Whole-Body Integration

Bodywork isn’t about “fixing a spot.”
It’s about improving communication across the entire system.

Hands-on work:
• connects multiple lines at once
• enhances global proprioception
• improves coordination and balance
• supports the body’s natural movement strategies

Tools tend to treat locally.
Hands treat the whole conversation.

7. Physical Touch Builds Trust, Comfort, and Confidence

Comfort creates confidence.
Confidence nurtures optimism and willingness.

Hands-on work:
• reduces defensiveness
• supports emotional safety
• encourages softness
• creates a more receptive body
• builds trust and relationship

Tools cannot build rapport or communicate safety.
Hands do — instantly.

A. Co-regulation: Nervous System to Nervous System

Humans, horses, and dogs all co-regulate through touch and proximity.
Your calm hands shift their physiology — and theirs shifts yours.
This shared state enables deeper, safer release.

B. Touch Enhances Sensory Clarity

Touch refines the brain’s map of the body (somatosensory resolution), improving:
• coordination
• balance
• movement efficiency
• reduced bracing

Tools cannot refine the sensory map with the same precision.

C. Hands Integrate Technique and Intuition

The brain blends tactile information with pattern recognition and subtle intuition.
Tools separate you from that information.
Hands plug you into it.

Take care of the horse's stifles! Even though "disengaging the hindquarters" is a popular technique when training young or unschooled horses, it taxes the stifles and often leads to soreness and dysfunction. Stifles are not designed well for sideways movement of the limbs.They must first be made stable and strong with forward, balanced work. Otherwise, not only is the stifle joint compromised, but the supporting musculature which originates from higher up the pelvis and lower back is also strained. The result is often inflamed joints, diminished range of motion, and poor use of the hind limbs. So, at the risk of being controversial, I would encourage all of us to avoid disengaging the hindquarters in an unfit horse.

TUESDAY TIP - Fitness 🐎

Well toned, supple muscles can stretch and contract freely. To avoid injury, it's important your horse is fit for the work he does.

✅ TRAIN REGULARLY. Shorter, more intense exercise several times a week increases muscular condtion more effectively than a longer period once a week.

✅ TRAIN APPROPRIATELY. For activities that require strength or power - such as jumping, few repetitions performed at higher intensity are effective. For disciplines that require less power but more stamina - such as dressage or endurance, less intense exercise, with a greater number of repetitions are appropriate.

✅ VARY HIS WORK. The same type of exercise shouldn't be done every day. Plan a varied exercise programme for your horse that includes hacking, schooling, hill work, pole work and fast work. This variety will activate more muscle groups and allows tissues time to recover.
