Welcome to Ben’s patch in Orange 🌱

When Ben ordered 17 Raised Garden Beds back in September, I was imagining he was on a huge property with endless space 😅 .. oh boy I was wrong… here is Ben’s patch which he has created in a section of his backyard in Orange. 👏👨‍🌾🌱 what an absolute impressive use of an area in the back yard, and the clever layout to maximise growing space 👏

I love that you don’t need a lot of space to create a patch, and in Ben’s case a huge patch 😍

Ben’s grown summer crops in abundance that he can freeze produce over winter 👏👏 I’ve just ordered a freezer with a goal to do same 🤞🤞

Thank you for sharing Ben and inspiring us what you can do with a backyard space 🌱😍👨‍🌾

What started as a vision.. transformed into a patch of life. 🌱very impressive 😍🌱👨‍🌾

Big love, Jo Henley

🙏 To the First Responders 🙏

Thank you 💛

In rural towns like Ungarie, when the call comes through, first responders just go. Often arriving to people they know.. friends, neighbours, or even family.

I know this personally. Growing up, I would watch my dad grab his bag and head straight out the door. Hours later he would return from an accident, emergency call, fire or flood… not always with good news 💔

These men and women show up, many as volunteers, like Dad and the Ungarie RFS team. They don’t do it for recognition or medals. They do it for their community, striving to protect lives and homes.

Such brilliant and brave people. But they are human too. They return home to jobs, families and everyday responsibilities, carrying many difficult experiences they rarely speak of.

My dad, Lindsay Henley.. he has been a RFS Group Captain for many many years.. dad and the Ungarie RFS team (like all rural towns), have been there for it all x NSW Rural Fire Service 💛

Thank you to all first responders.. the RFS, SES, police, paramedics, emergency services and even the everyday people who stop to help when others are in need. You are all hero’s 💛

Our towns and communities rely on these amazing men and women.. We see you 💛 and We thank you 💛

Today, we are also thinking of the many families who have sadly lost loved ones 💛

Jo Henley 💛 to my dad, it’s an honour to be your daughter 💛

🌱 Gardening 101: Thinning Carrots 🥕

We all want to get the most from our garden beds… but overcrowded beds can have a negative impact on your veggies. Well carrots that’s for sure 🥴

Without enough space, carrots often stay small or develop woody flavour 🤢 like ours 🥴

🥕 Did I know this? Yes.
🥕 Did I do this? No.
🥕 Why? It didn’t make it high enough on the priority list in the patch… or life. Low maintenance gardening taken too far 😅
🥕 Do I regret it? Yes.
🥕 Why? 9 out of 10 taste woody. 🥴

There are other reasons carrots can become woody, such as leaving them in the ground for too long. But that wasn’t the case here… I simply didn’t thin them.

Growing carrots:

🥕 Sow into loose soil, otherwise you’ll end up with legs. 🕺
🥕 Ideally sow after a heavy-feeding crop like tomatoes. As they like depleted soil. I learnt that from Keith.
🥕 We just sprinkle our seeds and lightly cover them with soil. Lots of people sow in neat rows, but I plant carrots with my kids, so neat rows aren’t really our style. 😅
🥕 Net them until they’re established, otherwise the blackbirds think it’s great fun to redecorate the patch. 🐦‍⬛
🥕 THIN THEM OUT. 🥴 As they sprout, thin them so each carrot has about 5cm of space to grow in a happy environment. You can thin out early on and as they develop.. but don’t leave thus late as mine 😂

It’s a bit like when both my kids climb into my bed at night… it gets overcrowded and not a happy bed.. well not for me anyway 🥴😂

There were three in the bed and the mum said… I should of thinned my carrots 🥕🥴😂

Our carrot bed looks fabulous but unfortunately they don’t taste fabulous 🥴

Big love Jo Henley - key message- priorities thinning your carrots 🥕 😂

🫜 Nothing beets growing beetroot 🫜

My favourite veggie to grow and eat 😍

So easy… direct sow, let it grow, harvest and enjoy 🤤 … and so vibrant in the patch 🌱

No pests, low maintenance 🙋‍♀️ it’s a real patch treat 🤤

Growing:

🌱 Soak seeds before sowing as they are a harder seed. I am yet to do this as I’ve never had issues before, but recently my germination rate hasn’t been as successful, so I might start soaking mine.

🌱 Direct sow 10–15cm apart and around 1.5cm deep.

🌱 Blackbirds are destroyers in my patch, so I net newly seeded beds until they are strong & established plants 🐦‍⬛

🌱 Each seed can germinate into a few seedlings sprouting, thin out if needed

Harvesting:

🌱 You can see the top of the beetroot poking above the soil, which gives you a pretty good idea of the size underneath. Personally, I prefer harvesting mine smaller rather than trying to a grow giant beetroot. I find they have the best flavour and texture.

🌱 One thing I love about beetroot is that the whole plant is edible. Harvest the leaves for salads and roast the beetroot 🤤

I’m not yet up to pickling or making relish on my growing journey because of my brain space, but they’re definitely goals for one day with my beetroot 🌱 and gotta love a good beetroot juice 🤤; also yet to make my own 🥴

🌱 I grow red and golden beetroot and this season white beetroot for the first time.

After my blind taste test with Frankie as my assistant 🤭, I highly recommend giving all three a go.

🫜 Red beetroot was the sweetest.
🫜 White beetroot was less sweet, allowing the full beetroot flavour to shine through.
🫜 Golden beetroot sits somewhere in between and has the most glorious colour.

I basically have a bed of beetroot on the go all the time… especially through winter when I get my root veggies pumping 🫜🌱

Big love,
Jo Henley 👩‍🌾 obviously a beetroot lover 🙋‍♀️
