Some patients arrive at our hospital weighing less than a block of chocolate 🍫

This tiny kitten, just one week old and weighing only 120 grams, was dropped into the care of AES Canberra.

When our Operations Manager, Geoff, arrived at the hospital that morning, he was greeted by the tiny patient and quickly got to work, syringe-feeding milk replacer to ensure the kitten had some much-needed nourishment before continuing on to Canberra Street Cat Alliance.

Sometimes the smallest patients make the biggest impression 💙

We're happy to report the little one has since been transferred and is doing well so far.

Reminder as we spend more time outside ☀️

Sticks aren't safe fetch toys. They can splinter and cause serious injuries to your pet's mouth, throat or stomach. Some cases even require emergency surgery.

Choose safer, pet-friendly fetch toys to keep playtime fun and injury-free ⚾

🐶 Could your dog be hiding pain?

Dogs are incredibly good at masking discomfort, which can make it difficult to know when something is wrong. From changes in behaviour and appetite to difficulty moving, there are several subtle signs that could indicate your pet is hurting and due for a trip to the vet.

Knowing what to look for can help you get them the care they need sooner and keep them comfortable and happy. 💙

School holidays mean more adventures for our pets... but they can also mean more emergencies.

With pets spending more time out and about, we often see an increase in injuries, tick paralysis cases, snake bites and other unexpected accidents during the holiday period.

Before you head off on your next adventure, take 30 seconds to save your local emergency vet number in your phone. 📱 It could make all the difference when every minute counts.

Stay safe and enjoy the school holidays 💙

As the weather warms up, snake activity starts to increase again 🐍

Spring is a time when snakes become more active as they emerge to bask, hunt and breed. It's the perfect time for pet owners to stay alert and be aware of the signs a snake may be nearby.

If you spot a snake, keep pets well away and contact a licensed snake catcher. If your pet is bitten by a snake, contact your local vet immediately.

Today on R U OK? Day, we're reminded that a simple conversation can have a lasting impact 💛

In busy workplaces and everyday life, it’s easy to miss the signs that someone may be struggling. Taking a moment to genuinely check in with a colleague, friend, family member or neighbour can help them feel seen, heard and supported.

Let's make asking "Are you OK?" more than a once-a-year reminder. Start the conversation, listen without judgement, and help create a culture of care every day.

We all know the common signs of mild allergic reactions in pets, like hives, itching, or a runny nose. But do you know how to spot a severe allergic reaction? ⚠️

While uncommon, dogs can experience life-threatening allergic reactions that require immediate veterinary attention. If your dog is showing signs of an allergic reaction, or you suspect they may have been exposed to an allergen, contact your vet straight away. Never take a "wait and see" approach.

Even seemingly mild symptoms can progress to anaphylaxis, particularly with repeated exposure to the same allergen. When it comes to allergic reactions, early treatment can make all the difference 💙

We’ve seen an early spike in tick paralysis cases at our Underwood hospital this winter ❄️

Early signs can be subtle, but the condition can progress quickly and may require intensive care, including ventilation.

Please check your pets daily, keep prevention up to date, and seek veterinary care straight away if something doesn’t seem right.

This is also a good reminder to review your pet insurance and make sure you’re covered for tick paralysis treatment, including hospitalisation and ventilation if needed.

In an emergency, we’re open when your regular vet is closed.

Brisbane heatwave incoming! 🌡️

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting "locally severe heatwave conditions" in Brisbane from today, culminating in the mid-30s on Thursday.

While we’re all doing our best to stay cool, don’t forget that our pets overheat much faster than we do, and heat stress can become dangerous quickly.

Keep your pets safe during the heatwave:
✔️ Provide plenty of fresh, cool water (add ice blocks if you can!)
✔️ Make sure they have access to full shade or a cool indoor area
✔️ Avoid walks during the middle of the day (early morning or late evening only) and avoid hot surfaces
✔️ Never leave pets in cars… not even for a minute
✔️ Offer cooling mats, frozen treats or damp towels to lie on
✔️ Keep brachycephalic breeds (pugs, bulldogs, etc.), seniors and long‑haired pets extra cool

If you notice heavy panting, drooling, wobbliness, vomiting, or your pet just “not acting right,” treat it as an emergency and get them to a vet ASAP.

Stay cool and stay safe!

We had an amazing time at the Bryants Road Vet Open Day this weekend!

The freshly renovated clinic looked fantastic, and the team ran informative tours showcasing their services and sharing valuable tips on pet preventative health care.

A huge thank you to Dr Caroline Kerr and her passionate team for inviting us to be part of the event 🙌

We also loved teaming up with Veterinary Specialist Services at our shared stall to promote the Underwood Hospital

It was great to connect with so many local pet owners and celebrate the amazing work being done in our community. 🐾

🌟🐾 What a Day at Dogs on the Green – Wynnum! 🐾🌟

Wow!! What an incredible day out! The Animal Emergency Service Underwood and Pet ICU teams loved every minute of the very first Dogs on the Green at George Clayton Park, Wynnum. 🐶🌳

✨ We got to:
✔️ Cuddle countless cute (and cheeky!) pups 🐕
✔️ Chat with amazing pet parents about after-hours care 🏥
✔️ Become “honorary members” of the Irish Wolfhound & Great Dane clubs (big paws, even bigger hearts!) 💙

We’re so grateful to everyone who stopped by! Your stories, questions, and support made the day unforgettable. Events like these remind us why we’re here: to support you and your furry family when you need us most. 💕

📸 Check out some of our favorite moments below! 👇 (warning: cuteness overload guaranteed!)
