🐱 FIV TESTING & VACCINATION SPECIAL – JULY ONLY! 🐱

Did you know that Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a common viral disease in cats that weakens the immune system, making affected cats more susceptible to infections and illness?

During July, we're offering:
✅ FIV Testing – $20 per cat
✅ FIV Vaccination – $55 for the first vaccination, then $40 per boosters

💉 The FIV vaccination course requires 3 initial vaccinations given weeks apart to provide protection, then cats require annual boosters to stay protected.

Which cats are most at risk?
• Outdoor cats
• Cats that roam and fight with other cats
• Entire or not desexed male cats
• Cats living in multi-cat environments

FIV is primarily spread through cat bite wounds, making cats that spend time outdoors at much higher risk.

Signs of FIV may include:
• Recurring infections
•Weight loss
• Poor coat condition
• Gingivitis and dental disease
• Slow wound healing
• Lethargy

Many infected cats can appear completely healthy for years, which is why testing is important before introducing new cats to the household and before considering vaccination.

🚨 PARVOVIRUS ALERT – TUMUT AREA 🚨

We have recently seen cases of Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) in the Tumut area.

Parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease that primarily affects puppies, but unvaccinated dogs of any age can become infected.

🐾 We strongly recommend that all puppies and unvaccinated dogs are vaccinated as soon as possible.

Signs of Parvovirus
⚠️ Lethargy or weakness
⚠️ Loss of appetite
⚠️ Vomiting
⚠️ Severe diarrhoea (often bloody)
⚠️ Fever
⚠️ Dehydration
⚠️ Weight loss or rapid deterioration

If your dog is showing any of these signs, please contact us immediately.

Important Information
🔹 Parvovirus spreads through infected faeces and contaminated environments.
🔹 The virus can survive in the environment for many months and is difficult to eliminate.
🔹 Puppies are at the highest risk of severe disease and death.
🔹 Vaccination is the most effective way to protect your dog.

Visiting the Clinic
If your puppy or dog is not fully vaccinated, please carry them into the clinic and avoid allowing them to walk on the ground, particularly around veterinary clinics, parks, footpaths, and other areas frequented by dogs.

Every puppy requires their last vaccination at 16 weeks.

📞 Please call ahead before bringing in a dog with vomiting or diarrhoea. This allows our team to take appropriate infection control measures and minimise the risk to other patients.

Diagnosis & Treatment
✅ We can perform in-clinic testing for Parvovirus.
✅ Early diagnosis and treatment significantly improve the chances of recovery.
✅ Treatment may include hospitalisation, intravenous fluids, anti-nausea medication, pain relief, nutritional support, and intensive nursing care.

Dr Steph recently presented an informative horse first aid and nutrition session at the Tumut Adult Riding Club. The day included practical demonstrations and discussions on common equine health issues, preventative care, and basic first aid techniques.

It was fantastic to see such a great turnout, with horse owners attending from Tumut and surrounding areas. Thank you to everyone who came along and contributed to a successful and engaging day of learning. 🐴🩺

🐾 Heartworm Alert for Tumut & the Riverina 🦟❤️

Did you know that heartworm is a potentially fatal disease that affects both dogs and cats and is spread by mosquitoes? Just one infected mosquito bite can transmit heartworm larvae to your pet.

Recent cases of heartworm have been reported throughout the Riverina region, including nearby areas such as Wagga Wagga, Young, Griffith, Leeton, Albury and Corowa, highlighting that heartworm is no longer just a "Queensland problem".

What is heartworm?
Heartworms are parasites that live in the heart, lungs and blood vessels of infected animals. Over time they can cause:
• Coughing
• Exercise intolerance
• Weight loss
• Breathing difficulties
• Heart failure
• Sudden death in severe cases

Can cats get heartworm too?
Yes! While cats are less commonly infected than dogs, they can still develop severe respiratory disease, sudden collapse, or even sudden death from heartworm infection.
Unfortunately, there is no approved treatment to eliminate adult heartworms in cats, making prevention especially important.

The good news? Heartworm is preventable.
Monthly tablets, spot-on treatments, or annual injections for dogs can provide effective protection. Puppies can receive their first injection at 12 weeks of age, then again at 6 months and then annually. Adult dogs require a heartworm test before injection.

Prevention is far safer, easier and less expensive than treating an established infection.

Mosquito numbers can increase with warmer weather and changing environmental conditions, all pets in the Tumut area should be kept up to date with their heartworm prevention.

Don’t worry, Dr Steph is still available for emergencies your pets, horses and livestock from 7 am-9 pm daily.

This week Dr Steph attended an intensive short course on small animal ultrasonography to further refine her skills and continue expanding the services available at Tumut Veterinary Clinic.

This additional training has helped enhance our ability to provide more comprehensive ultrasound examinations for our patients, allowing for improved diagnostics and patient care close to home.

At Tumut Veterinary Clinic, we are committed to ongoing education and staying up to date with advancements in veterinary medicine so we can continue providing the best possible care for your pets.
