A longer track for Cricket today and the first time I've asked her to track someone else. She's looking good 🤩🧡.

A big training day yesterday surrounded by my amazing team mates at Australian Search and Rescue K9. Such a terrific bunch of talented and hard-working humans and canines 💪🐾.

Some more out and backs with Cricket. These two were done away from home and have a corner. You'll see on the first one that she uses her understanding to 'search back' after a tiny overshoot on the corner. She has learned to do this without help, the lead is on for safety not for guidance. Very happy with her progress 😊.

I think 'out and backs' are my favourite tracking exercise 👣🐾👣🐾.

So what are they? Out and backs are a track that has been laid by walking out, putting down an end article and then walking back along the same track. They provide many learning opportunites, but perhaps the most important, is that they teach the dog to 'search back'.

When a dog overshoots (which they will) there is no more odour/track to follow. Through self-discovery the dog will learn that 'searching back' is the most effective way to re-find the track when they have run out of odour. Later on, this skill is vital when the dog overshoots a corner (which they will), or loses the track (which they will).

For this out and back I have used an angled start, so you will see Cricket turn right to find and follow the track. At the end she overshoots the article, which is expected and allows the learning to take place. What she does next makes me very happy 😃. No panicked running because she's out of odour, she knows what to do. Her head comes up, she turns around and bam! there's the article 🤩. She does all this on a loose lead, it's very important that I don't help at all. Later on, I won't know where the track goes so I need her to be able to do this on her own .

If you've got a dog who overshoots corners and can't find their way back without your help then out and backs are the perfect exercise to teach them 😊.

Tracking is most certainly my favourite activity to do with my dogs, so I'm very excited to be just starting out with Cricket. Out and backs are a foundation exercise and I'm pretty happy with her first attempt today. As we progress she will learn that following the human odour on the ground is the best way to get to the prize 👣🐾👣🐾.

I set a tricky trio of hides for the experienced teams on Friday and then let Solly have a turn at lunchtime. This search took about 3min 30sec, but I've cut out the sections where he's working at the other end of the hall.

I really like how he knows not to indicate on hides he has already found. I believe this is a combination of a clear communication system (he knows when to keep indicating and when to move on) and an intrinsic desire to solve the problem. Some dogs search to earn their reward, others search for the joy of it. I think Solly searches for the joy of it, the ball at the end is a bonus 🐾🥎.
