BE CAREFUL WHO YOU DISMISS IN THE HORSE WORLD

The nervous beginner asking too many questions…
The girl riding the “average” horse…
The person with the old float, second-hand tack, and big dreams…
The quiet one standing on the fence watching and learning…

They may not look successful yet.
But not everyone starts with money, connections, confidence, or opportunities.

What the horse world needs more of is kindness.
People who encourage.
People who teach.
People who remember what it felt like to be new.

Stay humble.
Support people on the way up.
And never underestimate someone with heart, grit, and a dream bigger than their circumstances.

The stubble smoke settled in over our place tonight. While it definitely wasn’t the nicest thing to breathe in, it sure made for some unreal photo effects in the car lights at feed time 🌫️✨🐴

Horse people friendships are a very specific type of chaos.

You can go from discussing trauma, nervous systems, and deep life philosophy…

To debating whether your horse just spooked at
a leaf,
a ghost,
or its own shadow 👀

You’ll spend 20 minutes analysing a horse’s facial expression like it’s a PhD thesis…

Then another 20 minutes crying with laughter because someone said
“for f**k’s sake Kevin”
…to a horse
…or a husband
…or honestly just into the void at this point 🤣

The best part?

Half these conversations happen while:

• carrying haynets
• holding a hoof
• standing knee deep in mud
• or clutching a mug of f**koffee like it’s the only thing keeping you going ☕️

And somehow…

Between the chaos, the cold, the mud and the madness…

There are moments where you laugh so much
you genuinely feel a bit sorry for people
who don’t get to hear your conversations.

Because they are elite level nonsense.

Unhinged.
Unfiltered.
And weirdly… exactly what your nervous system needed.

Horse people friendships?

Absolutely unmatched 🖤🐴

One of the most powerful mindset shifts I learned in horsemanship was from my Dad many years ago when I first set out on my training journey.

Often when a horse resists, spooks, pins its ears or ignores a cue, it’s easy to think, “He’s being naughty” or “She’s doing this on purpose.” But horses don’t think in those terms. They aren’t plotting, testing us or trying to win a battle. A horse has no agenda beyond one simple goal: finding comfort, safety and release from pressure.

To build on this there is an old idea called the “empty boat” effect.
The story goes like this: a man is rowing across a river when another boat crashes into him. He jumps up furious, ready to yell until he sees the boat is empty. Instantly, his anger disappears. There was no bad intention, no disrespect, no one to blame. It was simply a boat drifting with the current.
Working with horses is very much the same.

Every behaviour, even the ones we don’t like, is just the horse trying to answer one question: “What do I need to do to make the pressure go away?”
When you truly understand this, something changes in you as a rider. You stop taking things personally. Frustration turns into curiosity. Instead of reacting emotionally, you start looking for what the horse is feeling, what it understands, and where the communication became unclear. Resistance stops being a fight and becomes feedback.
Seeing your horse as an “empty boat” doesn’t mean allowing bad behaviour. It means responding with clarity instead of emotion, leadership instead of anger and timing instead of force.
Remember, your horse is never working against you, it’s only ever searching for the answer you haven’t made clear yet.

People tell me all the time, “You spend way too much time with your horses.”
They say it like it’s a problem. Like it’s something I should fix.

And maybe they’re right.
I am addicted.

But not just to riding.
Not just to training.
And not even just to horses themselves.

I’m addicted to the clarity that shows up when everything else gets quiet. I’m addicted to the honesty of an animal that can’t be fooled by words, excuses, or titles. Horses don’t care who you say you are — they respond to who you actually show up as.

That kind of feedback is uncomfortable for some people.
Because when you spend time with horses, you don’t just train them… you learn about yourself. Your timing. Your patience. Your leadership. Your ability to stay calm when things don’t go according to plan.

So no, it’s not an escape.
It’s accountability.

And once you experience that level of truth, it’s hard to go back to noise, distractions, and surface-level connection. That’s the addiction no one talks about — and the reason so many of us keep choosing the barn over the couch.

If any of this hits close to home, I’m breaking this down deeper in an upcoming webinar where I talk about why we really spend so much time with our horses — and what that says about who we’re becoming in the process.
