🐴💦 WEEKEND PROBLEM SOLVED! ☀️
Yesterday we asked:
“My horse gets really sweaty while working and, in the middle of summer, is even sweating in the paddock. What should I be doing to support my horse?”
Firstly — sweating is normal! It’s one of the main ways your horse regulates body temperature. But when horses sweat heavily, particularly in our hot Australian summers, they’re losing more than just water.
💧 WHAT ARE THEY LOSING?
Horse sweat contains important electrolytes, particularly sodium, chloride and potassium, along with smaller amounts of minerals such as magnesium and calcium.
A horse that is sweating heavily through work, travelling or simply coping with hot and humid conditions may need these losses replaced.
☀️ SO WHAT CAN WE DO?
💧 WATER, WATER, WATER
Make sure your horse always has access to plenty of fresh, clean water. Horses working or sweating heavily can have significantly increased water requirements.
🧂 DON’T FORGET SALT
Salt supplies sodium and chloride — two of the major electrolytes lost in sweat. Make sure your horse’s diet provides adequate salt rather than relying solely on a salt lick.
⚡ CONSIDER AN ELECTROLYTE
For horses sweating heavily, in regular work, competing, travelling or dealing with prolonged hot weather, a quality electrolyte supplement can help replace what is being lost through sweat.
⚠️ AND PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT’S NORMAL FOR YOUR HORSE
If your horse suddenly starts sweating excessively at rest, is sweating without an obvious reason, seems distressed or lethargic, has an elevated temperature, isn’t drinking normally, or you’re concerned about how they’re coping with the heat, contact your veterinarian.
💚 THE TAKE-HOME MESSAGE:
If they’re sweating, they’re losing water AND electrolytes. Supporting hydration means thinking about replacing both.
