* Important heatwave announcement *

As all Australians are aware we are currently experiencing a severe heatwave sweeping across the country. This week, particularly on Wednesday, this heatwave is forecast to hit southeast Queensland with temperatures up to 10 degrees above average expected. All wildlife can suffer in the heat but flying foxes are particularly prone to heat stress. Ourselves, and other bat rescue groups, will have trained and vaccinated teams stationed at high risk colonies ready to intervene with water sprayers if the flying foxes aren't coping. However, we cannot be everywhere at once so we are asking the public to please keep an eye out for bats in distress. In saying that it is INCREDIBLY important that no one enter or go near any flying fox colony during hot weather as this will cause the flying foxes to fly and can actually cause the colony to start becoming critically heat stressed. If you are able to view the colony from a distance please keep an eye on their behaviour. All flying foxes will be fanning themselves with their wings during the hot weather which is very normal and not cause for alarm. If you see flying foxes falling from trees, on the ground or hanging low to the ground please do not approach and give us, or your closest wildlife rescue, a call immediately. These bats are in heat stress and need quick assistance from one of our trained and vaccinated rescuers. Again we must stress not to attempt to approach a colony or to intervene yourself as this can be catastrophic for the colony.

This is a particularly vulnerable time of year for our flying foxes as the mums still have dependent young. So please, keep an eye out on Wednesday for bats in distress. Your call could save many lives!

Photo by the incredible Doug Gimesy Photography who attended a heat stress event last year. This is an example of when a wildlife rescue urgently needs to be called.

Remember that any bat by itself during the day is in need of help. Don’t touch the bat and give us a call immediately on ‭0488 228 134‬ for Brisbane and surrounds or your local wildlife rescue for other regions.

Who remembers Oakley?.

Well, He has now been released at Michelle’s ark animal rescue to hopefully have a safe and happy life!!

Please, slow down! And keep an eye out for little joeys like Oakley who may need your assistance!

They can be found all alone on the side of the road, or even in the mother’s pouch 😓.

PLEASE SHARE!!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Today on my walk along the Idalia lakes had brought an absolute horror to my attention...

Dead birds everywhere as well as dead freshwater turtles, a dead pelican , Dead snakes and basically anything that uses that water as a source of hydration or as a home.

This water is riddled with a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum aka ( Botulism ) and also blue green algae

Botulism is a paralytic disease caused by ingestion of a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Avian botulism can occur in any bird species, but is most frequently seen in ducks, geese, swans, ibis, egrets and pelicans.

Now let’s get into FACTS.

• Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium that produces dangerous toxins (botulinum toxins) under low-oxygen conditions.

• Botulinum toxins are one of the most lethal substances known.

• Spores produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum are heat-resistant and exist widely in the environment, and in the absence of oxygen they germinate, grow and then excrete toxins. There are 7 distinct forms of botulinum toxin, types A–G. Four of these (types A, B, E and rarely F) cause human botulism. Types C, D and E cause illness in other mammals, birds and fish.

• for people living in IDALIA along these lakes - C. botulinum produces spores and they exist widely in the environment including soil, river and sea water... So if your growing tomato’s or vegetables, PLEASE be careful.

I am alerting health authorities to this matter, along with the department of environment and science.

As some of you may know, I am a wildlife rescuer and I put in effort to preserve our wildlife. THIS WAS PREVENTABLE, The council have not made any efforts to unrestrict this water way and to me they should be ashamed of themselves.

I am distressed, saddened and shocked that this is allowed to continue without any attention.

PLEASE SHARE THIS AROUND. IT NEEDS COVERAGE.

P.S - I’m trying to figure out health and safety regulations to see what PPE would be required to remove non native invasive plants from the pond so if anybody would be interested in joining me to help cleanup it would be amazing. Although there would be risks.

EDIT : Gofund me setup! Let’s get the ball rolling, will purchase PPE so we as a community can come together when our own council won’t

😔

This isn't my Post or Photo, it's from one of my Rehabber Groups, I'm sharing this because I know people tend to come in contact with Wildlife and Need a Rehabbers help, When a Rehabber tells you Not to do something, You DONT DO IT.

"DONT FEED ANY WILD ANIMAL WHEN A REHABBER TELLS YOU NOT TO!
Last night at midnight I was out on a rescue mission, going into Conway SC. I had instructed the finder not to feed and to keep baby warm.
When I arrived at the finders house after a three hour drive and when I asked the finder what she did during the three hours, she said and I quote "I fed 1 cup of vaporized milk and 1 tablespoon of sugar and I gave the baby a bath". I froze and went into a trance. I knew that this sweet, innocent soul was going to die, but I had faith that she was going to be ok either way.
I fought for her life. I gave nebulizer treatments, injectable baytril, SMZ, pain meds, heat, sub q fluids, etc. I checked on her every 5 minutes to wipe the blood coming from her nose so she could breathe.
Nothing worked. Sugar (the squirrel) has passed.
She will never get to live her life. She will never breathe the October air. She will never have kids of her own. She will never build a nest or fall in love. She will never LIVE.
Just one thing could have changed this outcome and that is to listen to a rehabbers exact instructions.
I don't know everything and I haven't seen everything, but I know enough to make certain recommendations to finders. I have seen aspiration pneumonia and what it can do. We as rehabbers know what we are doing, we have raised thousands and released thousands of wildlife. Please when you find an animal, any animal, please don't feed it. It could mean life or death and I mean that. Life...or death."

We don’t know what’s wrong with “ Cow “, Our newest addition in care, But we shall find out after a vet visit today.

Cow is a northern brown bandicoot, you’ll probably never see one of these shy critters... But you may in fact come across the evidence of them foraging and digging holes on your grass lawn during the previous night.

We shall give you all updates 🥰
