🐴🧂 Why Salt is Important for Horses During Dry, Cooler Weather 🧂🐴

As the weather cools down and paddocks start drying off, many horses begin eating more hay and less fresh pasture. While they may not seem as thirsty as they do in summer, this is actually a really important time to make sure they’re getting enough salt!

🌾 More Hay = More Water Needed
Hay contains much less moisture than fresh grass, so horses need to drink more water to help keep their digestive system moving properly.

🧂 Salt Encourages Drinking
Adding salt to your horse’s diet helps stimulate their thirst response, encouraging them to drink enough water throughout the day.

💧 Supports Digestive Health
Adequate water intake helps reduce the risk of impaction colic, which can become more common when horses are consuming large amounts of dry forage.

❄️ Cool Weather Can Be Deceptive
Horses often drink less in cooler weather simply because they don’t feel as thirsty. Unfortunately, this can increase the risk of dehydration without owners even realising it.

🍂🐴 As paddocks dry out and pasture cover thins, horses tend to graze much closer to the ground — increasing the chance of ingesting sand and dirt along with what little feed is available 🌾➡️🏜️

Unlike roughage, sand doesn’t pass as easily through the digestive system. Over time, it can accumulate in the gut and interfere with normal function, which is why this time of year is when many horse owners become more mindful of digestive support ⚠️

Psyllium husk is commonly used as a source of soluble fibre that forms a gel-like consistency in the gut. This action can help bind and move ingested sand through the digestive tract as part of a broader management approach 💧➡️🌀

It’s also worth considering simple management practices alongside supplementation:
• Providing adequate forage to reduce ground grazing 🌿
• Feeding hay in feeders or off mats where possible 🪣
• Rotating paddocks to maintain better ground cover 🔄

Seasonal changes can have a bigger impact than we sometimes realise — a small adjustment in management can go a long way in supporting your horse’s overall gut health 💚
