Meet Frankie! 🐾

This tiny little Italian Greyhound came in for his vaccination and was quite possibly the cutest little patient we’ve had in our hands! 🥹

Frankie was so teeny, he practically fit in the palm of our hands. 🥰

Safe to say, we were all a little bit obsessed! 💚

Bird flu is making headlines, so Better Homes & Gardens asked Greencross Vets what it means for our pets.

Greencross Vets veterinarian Dr Nina shares practical advice to help pet parents understand the risks and take simple precautions.

“Bird flu can infect all mammals, so dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets can all be infected.”

From avoiding contact with sick or dead wildlife to keeping cats indoors and dogs on a leash around wildlife, a few simple steps can help reduce exposure.

🖤 A majestic visitor who never should have needed a trip to the vet.

This beautiful black swan was found with a fishing hook stuck in its mouth - a painful and completely preventable injury caused by discarded fishing gear.

Removing the hook required a general anaesthetic, along with pain relief to keep this feathered patient comfortable while we treated them. 🦢

A reminder to all anglers: please take your fishing line, hooks and tackle home with you or use a designated disposal bin. The Victorian Fisheries Authority advises that old fishing line should be placed in bins, or if there are no bins available, taken home, cut up and disposed of in general waste. Their Seal the Loop program also provides dedicated bins for unwanted fishing line, hooks, netting and rope. (VFA)

Discarded fishing gear can cause entanglement, injury and even death to wildlife. A few extra seconds to dispose of your gear properly can make a huge difference. 💔

🎣 Fish responsibly. Dispose responsibly. Protect our wildlife. A big thanks for the wildlife careers for bringing this amazing swan in and thanks to our team for helping 🫶🏼

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr Kristie Remmert, Veterinary Director located at our Greencross Vets clinic in Deeragun, Townsville who passed away on Sunday 28 January.
In memory of Kristie, we honour a life dedicated to the love and care of animals. Her passing leaves a void in the veterinary community, marked by the loss of someone whose dedication to animals transcended her professional duties.

Kristie joined Greencross in May of 2020 as a new Graduate at Greencross Willows and Aitkenvale, in Townsville. She then spent a significant amount of time, working at Greencross Maitland where she was a key member of the team and community. In 2023 she then returned to Townsville joining the Deeragun team. Kristie has been an outstanding veterinarian across her entire tenure at Greencross, receiving the “Veterinarian Associate of the Year – North Queensland” in August of 2023, which led to her accelerated career progression and appointment of Vet Director of Deeragun in August 2023.

Our deepest condolences extend to Kristie's family and friends, and to the entire Greencross Vets team, who have all been informed and are receiving the support they need during this difficult time.
In these challenging moments, we encourage anyone in need of support, both within and outside the veterinary community, to reach out. Lifeline can be contacted at 13 11 14, and for our veterinary colleagues, the Australian Veterinary Association counselling support is available at 1300 687 327.

⭐️ Wildlife week ⭐️

Last week we had multiple injured wildlife brought to us by caring members of the public.

We had an adorable Joey that was brought into us after being found in his mums pouch on the side of the road. This Joey had a very small, superficial wound on his hind leg. Upon examination by the vet, it was best determined this Joey could be sent to a carer with appropriate management of the wound.
He was later collected by a member of NQ Wildlife Rescue for further care and rehabilitation.

Our next little one to be brought in was a beautiful Kookaburra that had been wrapped in some old fishing line.
This kookaburra was anaesthetised by Dr Amy & Dr Catherine in order to remove the fishing line and hook that had wrapped it’s way around the birds wings. Luckily the bird did not suffer any wounds or breaks, which we confirmed with radiographs. The Kookaburra was released after some much needed rest, returned to the same location it was found.

Finally our most frequent visitor, Johnny the Magpie. Johnny was brought into us after his leg was half amputated after an incident where he flew into a ceiling fan. He was given pain relief and fluids as soon as he was admitted and kept warm overnight until we could perform surgery. Dr Naomi removed the remainder of Johnny’s leg and a support bandage was placed to help keep the wound clean, and to help him adapt to life with one leg. Johnny is still a frequent visitor at Greencross Fairfield and his carer brings him in every few days for a bandage change. At this stage, Johnny will not be released back into the wild and he will live the remainder of his life with his amazing carer.

Meet Arlo, the 2yr old German Shepherd. Arlo recently visited the wonderful team at Greencross Fairfield for his desexing and gastropexy procedure. A gastropexy is a surgical procedure that is preformed to prevent GDV ( gastric dilation & volvulus), also known as bloat, a common condition amongst deep chested dogs that can be life threatening if early surgical intervention is not provided. Arlo was so brave that he was awarded with a bravery certificate from nurse Johanna. Arlo has since recovered well 🙂
