β€˜Star crossed lovers’ πŸ’«
This antique bubble frame features a pair of male and female comet moth also known as the Madagascan moon moth (Argema mittrei).
These stunning moths do not eat as adults and males only lives for up to 5 days while females can live up to 10. Although endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, the comet moth has been bred successfully in captivity.

This dome is a really cool one for me. It features a giant forest scorpion perched in a defensive pose on a large chunk of cyanite. I wanted to highlight the scorpion itself and find due to their dark colouration they are often lost into backgrounds of domes especially if they are too busy. Not filling this piece with florals was a good practice of self control I’m not going to lie πŸ˜‚

This scorpion species are fluorescent glowing a bright blue under ultraviolet light, therefore this entire piece will be a stunning blue in the right lighting. πŸ’™πŸ’™

It’s not fully understood why this phenomenon occurs but there are some theories related to hunting, mating and even sun protection!

I think it’s about time I introduced myself on this page

Heya! My name is Alyssa and I’m the face, mind and hands behind Salems Oddities.

I originally started framing insects as a passion project and a means to create my own gallery wall. This grew to playing with tarantulas in domes but quickly expanded once my friends began asking me to make them art pieces also. I now love working with different mediums, jewellery, antique frames, and regularly sell at the local markets here in Townsville.

If someone were to ask me what type of work I enjoy doing most on here and am best at, I would say repurposing vintage frames. My imposter syndrome definitely gets in the way at times but these pieces are something I’m immensely proud of and I find the time, creativity and attention to detail I am able to pour into these larger pieces incredibly rewarding.

I currently work full time as a paramedic and mother of a toddler and live in the Townsville with my partner Lucas, our 2 cats and 2 dogs. If you have been to my stalls you will often see Lucas with me helping make sure these often busy market days go smoothly (he also is amazing and carries all the heavy things for me β‹†π™šβ‚ŠΛšβŠΉβ™‘). I am extremely blessed both in my personal life and my life on here because I have many beautiful people who support me and my work.

I’m not 100% sure on the future direction of Salems Oddities. In the meantime I’m having fun trying new things and connecting with lots of amazing new people who can appreciate my art and the beauty of bugs (my special interest!). I truly love what I do on here and am super thankful I get to do it all the time❣️

If there’s anything you’d like to know, ask away!

Thank you for your interest in my work and I hope I get to make something unique for you some day!

These are cool little guys. The Maydes Swallowtail caterpillars feed off the poisonous pipevine plants, making the insects poisonous themselves; they taste very bad to ward off predators. Since birds avoid these butterflies, other swallowtail species tend to mimic their coloration.
