Hello baby 🐦‍⬛

Reported after being seen around a work site for two days calling. They found one of the parent’s deceased/multilated by an animal 😞 the other parent was nowhere to be seen.

Bubs is terrified and emaciated but now tucked into a warm comforting nest sound asleep after rehydration therapy and some food.

I can’t replace the parents that have been lost but will give this baby a new chance in life ♥️

Special thanks to Jazz and Steve for the rescue and transporting it to me.

Sometimes some extra reassurance is needed with new arrivals.

Many people think “they are just birds, or animals”

What they don’t see is these babies have lost having their parents around for some reason or another. Everything they have ever known has been changed within an instant and most often there’s a pathway of trauma leading them to how they end up in our care.

While I take special care to allow them to be “birds” with their buddies once they are settled in, every single little being that comes through this door presents differently with needs of their own.

“Mag” named by their rescuer needed softness, quietness, a gentle welcome, soft bedding with some heat despite being a fledgy that like the others already should be in an enclosure with perches

We have to be intuitive and of course over time our ability to read them gets stronger. It takes a carer who is ok to spend the time that is needed ensuring when they let us know how they are feeling we listen.

Anyone would think I never feed the babies around here 🤭

They both need names ❤️ write your suggestions below in the comments!

It’s been a busy time and breeding season has only begun.

We are at full capacity now with another arrival yesterday (on the right) and another rescue earlier today currently in our triage room.

Please understand if we say no when you call it is due to not having enough actual space to house more, or capacity as one human being to physically do more than possible, we have to set limits or we cannot give each bird 100% quality care and I have a few really difficult cases in currently.

I know it can be frustrating when you’re trying to seek help for injured or orphaned birds at this time, but I am only one human doing the rehab work that I do, I do not have volunteers or outside help (by my choosing)

Every life does matter yes ♥️ and it breaks my heart turning birds away but the truth is there is a shortage of people doing what I do. There is currently only myself and Winchelsea wildlife shelter in our local area taking orphans and injured birds. That’s a whole lot of birds from a very large area with nobody but us to care for them.

If you love and care for birds and wildlife then maybe you could help somehow?

We need more rescuers, transporters (for vital vet treatment and moving animals between shelters) and donations as what we do is totally self funded. We work to pay to treat the birds and we cannot claim any of it back aside from a small amount which covers around two weeks worth of care, we are open all year 24:7.

I’ve had to do transport trips on-top of caring over the past two weeks that have stretched me beyond my limits as there is only a few people around to help with this, transporting is also a voluntary position but possibly if people had time to even do one transport a week us carers would receive more of the help we need.

If you would consider becoming a rescuer or transporter I can help direct you to the right places for basic training.

After three long weeks we finally managed to catch this female adult Magpie who is a local out the back reserve. She has a server case of avian pox which is a virus that can last the 3-8 week mark. Most often a bird will recover from it, however if they have weakened immunity they can succumb to it.

With full flight it was incredibly difficult and took many hours and constant trying and gaining enough trust to get close enough to use a pole net for capture. The last three days we made it our mission to just keep trying and succeed. It also means that now she won’t be spreading it to other wild magpies in the local grove area.

Trying to do this while looking after all of our rescues was a very big task 👏 and was a combined effort my partner worked just as hard as I did for this girl.

This little one has been somewhat flat. So we are giving it around the clock ⏰ special treatments.

Red light therapy is one of our go to for relaxation and health benefits. Alongside teaching it to drink on its own so it can sip away at rehydration fluids.

Still yet to be named as they are hopefully still going to be reunited with Mum and Dad 🤞

Yesterday with the heavy winds here the little one on the right was blown down and the nest only left with a few twigs.

Mum and dad were around with two other siblings but this little guy isn’t quite strong enough to stay on the branches.

We will try a reunite attempt over the next week or so as they are very close to being able to fledge properly.
