🌙 PLANNING A LITTER? DON’T FORGET THE LIGHT! 🐾
When preparing for a litter, we often focus on nutrition, health testing and creating a calm environment — but light exposure is another important factor to consider during pregnancy and whelping.
Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant and plays an important role in the body. Its production is strongly influenced by the natural light–dark cycle, which is why managing a pregnant bitch’s environment can be an important part of supporting her wellbeing and her developing puppies.
During pregnancy, the body is under significant metabolic demands. Reducing unnecessary stress and providing a calm, appropriately managed environment may help support normal physiological processes and minimise oxidative stress.
🌙 Why does darkness matter during whelping?
Natural melatonin levels rise during darkness. The theory behind dark whelping is that maintaining a quiet, dark or very dim environment during labour may help support the hormonal processes involved in normal uterine contractions.
Uterine inertia occurs when the uterus does not contract effectively during labour and is an important cause of difficult births (dystocia) in dogs. There are many possible causes, including hormonal factors, uterine overstretching, litter size, fetal malposition and exhaustion — so light exposure is only one factor among many.
For breeders, this is a great reminder to think about the whelping environment before the litter arrives. A calm, quiet, temperature-controlled space with carefully managed lighting can help create the best possible environment for mum and her puppies.
🐶 Good preparation starts well before whelping.
Responsible breeding involves considering every aspect of a pregnancy — from health testing and nutrition through to stress management, environmental enrichment and preparing a safe whelping space.
And, of course, any prolonged or difficult labour requires prompt veterinary attention, as dystocia can become an emergency for both mum and puppies.

PLANNING A LITTER?
Start thinking about light now! We know that melatonin affects many aspects of an animal's physiology, and this is especially true during gestation.
Pregnancy makes major metabolic demands on the bitch, so avoiding stress and providing an environment that supports melatonin production is critical.
As a major antioxidant, melatonin can mitigate the damage caused by metabolic production of free radicals that can cause DNA mutations and affect fetal growth and development. Events during gestation can have effects that last a lifetime, so management of oxidative stress beginning from the time of breeding is important.
Melatonin secretion is controlled by light, so breeders need to be aware of the environmental lights in the areas where the bitch lives. A poorly controlled light environment during gestation can affect not only fetal development, but it can also interrupt the timing of labor. Whelping should commence at night, when darkness in the den will prevent uterine inertia and support normal secretion of melatonin.
Poor control of light exposure can result in initiation of whelping during the daytime, when light exposure will block melatonin secretion. The result is uterine inertia that causes prolonged labor, with a result of stillborn or distressed newborns that often fail to thrive despite the breeder's best efforts.
If you're planning a litter, now is the time to also be planning how you will manage the light environment of the bitch, both during gestation and during whelping.
You can get the best start for your litter by enrolling in the Dark Whelping Project, where you will receive guidance about setting up the conditions for good fetal development and fast, safe whelping.
