⚠️ With cases of H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) now detected on the Queensland coast, this is a good time to think about how to keep your pets safe. ⚠️

H5N1 avian influenza can infect cats and often causes severe, potentially fatal illness, with reported mortality rates of 50–70%. Cats are most commonly exposed by eating infected birds, consuming raw meat or unpasteurised milk, or through close contact with sick wildlife.

One of the simplest ways to reduce your cat's risk is to keep them contained in your house or in a secure outdoor cat enclosure. Not only does this help protect them from infectious diseases like bird flu, but it also protects our native wildlife. 🦜 WE ARE STILL ACCEPTING SICK AND INJURED BIRDS 🦜

At AHT Vets, we take caring for our native wildlife very seriously, and we remain committed to providing treatment for sick and injured wild birds.

While we are closely monitoring the current H5N1 avian influenza outbreak in Queensland, we have introduced additional protocols to help protect our staff, clients, and patients.

If you are bringing an injured bird to our clinic, *please do not enter the building*. Instead, call us when you arrive in the car park. A member of our team (wearing appropriate PPE) will come out to collect the bird and move it to our designated isolation space to be triaged.

We are committed to continuing to care for our native wildlife throughout this event. If our protocols or procedures need to change, we will keep our community informed as soon as possible.

If you find sick or dead wild birds in your area, avoid handling them and report them to Biosecurity Queensland. Record your location and report it to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Not every sore ear is an ear infection🦠

Luna visited us after developing discomfort in one of her ears. As part of her work-up, we collected an ear swab to look for evidence of bacteria or yeast under the microscope and performed an otoscopic examination to look deeper into her ear canal. While her ear swab did not reveal any cause for concern, the otoscopic examination revealed the real cause of her discomfort - a foreign body lodged in her ear.🫢

The foreign material was carefully removed by Dr Tori, and the images below show it under the microscope. While we can’t identify it with certainty, it appears to be either part of an insect or a small piece of plant material! 🐜🌿

Cases like Luna’s are a good reminder that ear infections aren’t the only cause of head shaking, scratching, or ear pain. Foreign bodies such as grass seeds, insects, and other debris can become trapped in the ear canal and cause significant irritation. A thorough ear examination is essential to identify the underlying cause and ensure the most appropriate treatment.💊

Luna was such a good girl for all of her ear testing and exams, and sat perfectly still while Dr Tori removed the offending foreign body.🫶😻

❗️H5 Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) ❗️

While the risk to most pets remains low, H5 Avian Influenza has been detected in Australia, making it a good time to take a few simple precautions.

🐦 Keep dogs and cats away from wild birds, especially waterbirds, and avoid contact with sick or dead birds.
🐾 If your pet has had contact with a sick or dead bird and becomes unwell, contact your veterinarian.
🪿If you find sick or dead wild birds in your area, avoid handling them and report them to Biosecurity Queensland. Record your location and report it to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
🐣Take extra precautions with domesticated bird flocks, including keeping them away from wild birds and maintaining good hand and cage hygiene.

Bird flu mainly affects birds, though it can occasionally affect other animals and, very rarely, humans. If you don’t work directly with birds, your risk in Australia remains low.

If you come across a sick or injured bird, it’s important to know how to keep both yourself and your pets safe. 🐦

The instinct to help is completely natural, but the safest way to help is from a distance.

Bird flu viruses rarely spread to people, but this can happen through close contact with infected animals (alive or deceased), or contaminated environments.

If you find a sick, injured, or deceased bird:
• Do not touch the bird
• Keep pets and people well away
• Take a photo and note the date and location
• Report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888

These simple steps help protect Australia’s wildlife and reduce any potential risk to you and your pets. 💙
