Young horses develop sharp enamel points as their deciduous (baby), and then permanent teeth, erupt and come into wear.

Before the age of five, they will shed up to 24 deciduous teeth as the permanent teeth come through.

This stage often coincides with the introduction of bitting and early ridden work, where any discomfort in the mouth may affect acceptance of the bit and behaviour.

Regular dental examinations will ensure a positive start to their ridden career.

Young horses require treatment from about 18 months old and every 6 months frequency is required to avoid future problems.

Recently, I’ve been reminded how important honesty is in equine care.

When dental work is said to have been done but hasn’t, it can compromise a horse’s health and delay necessary treatment. These situations are not only harmful to the animal, but also damaging to small businesses built on trust and reputation.

If I recommend more frequent dental work for your horse, it’s always for a valid reason — every horse is different, and some require closer monitoring to stay comfortable and healthy.

It’s also important to understand that routine maintenance cases are very different from horses that have not received regular care. Horses with overdue dental work often require significantly more time, care, and correction, which is reflected in pricing.

I take pride in providing honest, professional care and will always advocate for the wellbeing of the horse first.

Let’s work together to keep standards high and horses healthy.
