Northside Emergency Vet Service (NEVS) is based in Terrey Hills, Sydney. NEVS works as a co-operative with 33 veterinary hospitals on Sydney's Northern Beaches & North Shore. We are open all public holidays. The emergency vets and nurses at NEVS are highly experienced, qualified and skilled in the critical care of your pet. NEVS vets and nurses stay fully appraised of the latest veterinary knowledge and research to ensure your pet receives the best in emergency vet care. 🐾 TICK PREVENTION: HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GIVE IT? 🕷️
Tick season is well and truly here on the Northern Beaches - and we’re seeing plenty of tick paralysis cases at NEVS.
One of the most common things we see? Tick prevention that has lapsed or is overdue.

⚠️ Why does NEVS recommend shorter intervals for some products during tick season?

No tick prevention is 100% effective, and tick products don't kill ticks instantly. With some longer-acting products, ticks may take slightly longer to die as the product gets closer to its next dose.

Here on the Northern Beaches, we have high numbers of very potent paralysis ticks. Occasionally, a pet can become unwell in the time it takes their prevention to kill the tick.

That's why NEVS recommends shorter dosing intervals for some products during the higher-risk spring and summer months. The products listed remain safe when used at these recommended intervals.

And prevention doesn't replace checking your pet. Check for ticks every day - even when prevention is up to date.

🕷️ Keep the prevention up. Don't skip a dose. Keep checking.

If your pet develops weakness, wobbliness, vomiting or retching, a change in their bark/meow or difficulty breathing, seek veterinary attention urgently.

💙 Happy Vet Nurse & Technologist Appreciation Day!

Here all night, still sneaking in cuddles - that’s our NEVS nursing team

They’re monitoring anaesthetics, managing transfusions, caring for critical patients and reassuring worried families. Usually with someone asking, “Can you just…?” halfway through.

From trainees to nurses and technologists with decades of experience, there’s a lot of knowledge in the building and plenty of patience for both the patients and the vets!

To our NEVS nurses and techs: thanks for everything you do, especially in the small hours when most people are asleep. 💙

Tick season is well and truly here. 🕷️🐾

We’re seeing lots of tick paralysis cases at NEVS, and many of these patients have had their tick prevention lapse. Keep your pet’s prevention up to date and don’t skip a dose.
Our nurse Kayley is giving this patient a very short haircut - for a very good reason! A tick clip helps us search thoroughly for ticks, which can be tiny and easy to miss beneath the coat. Finding one doesn’t mean there aren’t more hiding.

Keep an eye on our page: we’ll be sharing our recommended tick prevention products and how often to give them.

A tame budgie was found in Chatswood and has been brought into Northside Emergency Vet Terrey Hills on 4th October Sunday. I know the owner is out there somewhere!

Northside Emergency Veterinary Service (NEVS) is open 24 hours throughout the October long weekend, from 6pm Friday through to 8am Tuesday.

We hope you and your pets have a safe and relaxing long weekend, but if you need us, our experienced emergency team is here around the clock for all veterinary emergencies, including injured wildlife and stray animals.

🐾 Today we’re celebrating our brilliant Animal Attendants! 💙

They walk the dogs, feed our patients, change bedding, clean kennels, restock supplies, tackle the never-ending laundry pile and somehow keep the hospital running smoothly while the rest of us create chaos around them. 😅

For many people, being an Animal Attendant is also their first job in a veterinary hospital. At NEVS, our Attendant team includes high school students, vet students and trainee nurses - getting their first taste of hospital life and learning just how much work goes on behind the scenes.

They’re an extra set of hands, eyes and cuddles for our patients, and an important part of the NEVS team.

So today we’re saying a very well-deserved THANK YOU (and there may be a little gift involved 🎁).

The long weekend is almost here! 🎉

If your pet takes regular medication 💊💉 like insulin, anti-inflammatories, thyroid or allergy meds, now's the time to check you've got enough to see you through until after the long weekend.

NEVS is always here to help, but as an emergency hospital we don't carry the full range your regular vet might stock (like long-term allergy or behaviour medications). And by NSW law, if we haven't seen your pet at NEVS in the last 6 months, we need to do a consult before we can dispense prescription medication.

A quick check now can save you extra stress and cost later so if you need a top-up, reach out to your regular vet today.

Milo went snuffling where he shouldn’t and ended up with a fish hook caught in his lower lip!

Because fish hooks are barbed, they often can’t simply be pulled back out. Milo was sedated at NEVS so our vet could push the hook through, cut it and safely remove the barbed end
Thankfully, he recovered well and headed home the same day, hopefully a little less interested in fishing gear!

Meet Chutney - blood donor, lifesaver… and sock enthusiast. 🩸🧦🐾

Chutney is one of our wonderful blood donors, regularly giving blood to help dogs in need. But recently, it was Chutney who needed help from the NEVS team.
After breaking into the kids’ room and helping himself to an impressive collection of socks, Chutney arrived at NEVS with a stomach full of fabric.

The final count? 12 socks. 🧦🧦🧦

Chutney underwent emergency surgery to remove them all and, thankfully, made a fantastic recovery. By the next day he was bright, comfortable, eating well and ready to head home.

We’re very used to seeing Chutney as one of the heroes donating blood for our patients, so we were especially happy to be able to return the favour and look after him when he needed us. ❤️
