Above and Beyond Dog Training and Rehabilitation

Above and Beyond Dog Training and Rehabilitation Hi my name is Cathy Grant and I am a Nationally Accredited Dog Trainer. I studied with National Dog Training Federation in Sydney.

My training is based on what your dog requires. I will listen to you and help keep your dog apart of your family. I studied with NDTF who base their training on real facts. i spent a week learning from one of Australia's best trainers The Dog Father based in Townsville. I have completed Nepopo training with K9 Solutions in WA. My training is suited to the dog that is presented before me.

One of our weekend clients was this handsome boy Jaxx. At just 9 months and a whole life ahead of him with learning as it is for his owners.
This session was mostly about relationship and building skills in all. Jaxx has no ears when asked to recall. The environment is far more important. This can often be a deadly choice as sometimes we urgently require our dog to come to us. Anytime i use my dogs name i require them otherwise I leave them to do their own stuff. I walk out the front and call my dog. I might just want to know what their up too. They come and I have peace of mind.
Jaxx is just beginning to lunge and bark at dogs. This can be lack of fulfilment, or socialisation. It can be frustration. It may be anxiety or a fearful response or even a tight leash from owners leading to other behaviours. In Jaxx we are going to work with building relationship, giving him mind games, teaching him to problem solve and to use that very good brain.
Well done to these great owners for showing up for Jaxx. This boy is a delight.

This intermediate class is really showing some great talent. Apart from obedience we are learning a couple of joint tricks for extra skills. So good to watch them all develop and have fun.

Nosework is an extremely important part of our dogs life. They have incredible ability to find the smallest of things. The ability to detect the direction of odour. The ability of dissecting what is important to them. The environment is full of odours. Teaching them to find a particular odour amongst all those other odours is so much fun. To understand how their nose works as an owner and to provide the activities for them to enjoy.
In last nights class we began a new odour. The owners have been working with their dogs teaching them. Teaching them the correct behaviours as an indication as well and sometimes that's the hard part especially when you have such an active dog. Some dogs do rush which is where we calm them down. Here is Audrey and Judi working the room. Audrey does like to push, pull prod, bite, move and everything else that comes with excited behaviours but Judi has really stepped up in handling and reading Audrey.
Turning up is one thing doing the background work is what makes all the difference. Homework!
The ability to sniff out odours is confidence building and exhausting work. Watch till end!
Thank you Judi for such great work. There are many in the classes doing well but this week I am highlighting Audrey the bullet.

This morning i was working one of the rescue dogs we have in. His favourite thing to do is play, so a lot of our time together is playing and him running around but when i work him for structured behaviours i can't have him working like an energised battery where he no longer hears me because of excitement. He began playing the goofball. Instead of getting annoyed or frustrated I looked at ME! I looked at how he was perceiving me. What my own energy must looked like through his eyes. Often we miss that key element. What he did not do is get frustrated at me nor walk away. We often call our dog's stubborn or other names but they in return just try their best.
The video is of Zeke doing herding. I am over the moon with where he is in 5 months of training but during that 5 months I have practice and paid for weekly sessions. I know that Zeke enjoys it but I also know Zeke is not getting frustrated at my lack of knowledge. He doesn't get cranky when I mix up my words or my body language. He sits and waits for the clarity and understanding but when it's not there he will make a choice that he feels is right.
Often we miss the fact that we are the ones who inhibit our dogs learning. We stop all greatness from happening. Both these dogs that I am talking about are trying to fit into our society. Our way of life. Our rules and structure and they really do a damn good job!

Beautiful afternoon with this amazing advanced class yesterday.
