🐸 Cane toad season is here! Here’s how to keep your pets safe.

With the recent rain and warmer weather, we're entering peak cane toad season. Unfortunately, that means we're likely to see more pets coming into contact with these highly toxic toads.

Dogs are particularly at risk, as many can't resist investigating anything that hops across the backyard during evening toilet breaks.

If you suspect your pet has mouthed or licked a cane toad:
✅ Use a damp cloth to wipe the inside of their mouth, removing the slimy toxin. Continue wiping for 10-20 minutes if possible.
❌ Do not use a hose, as water can be inhaled into the lungs and cause serious complications.
🚑 Seek veterinary attention immediately. Cane toad poisoning can become life-threatening very quickly.

A few simple precautions can help reduce the risk:
✔️ Bring pets inside at night where possible
✔️ Supervise evening toilet breaks
✔️ Use a torch when outdoors after dark
✔️ Regularly refresh outdoor water bowls and keep food bowls indoors

💙 If your pet has come into contact with a cane toad, don't wait for symptoms to appear. Start wiping their mouth and seek veterinary advice straight away. Acting quickly can save their life.

🎃 Planning your Halloween decorations?

Before you stretch out the fake spider webs, it's worth knowing they can be dangerous for pets and wildlife.

The thin synthetic fibres can entangle birds, bats and reptiles, causing serious injuries and making it difficult for them to escape. Curious pets may also chew or swallow the material, potentially leading to an emergency visit.

This Halloween, consider pet and wildlife-friendly alternatives like paper decorations, wooden ornaments, pumpkins or reusable garlands instead.

A safer celebration is something everyone can enjoy 💙

A happy ending for Alfie! 💙

After going missing for six long days, little Alfie was finally been reunited with his family 🥹

His disappearance couldn't have come at a worse time. Alfie was meant to be the ring bearer at his parents' wedding, but sadly he was still missing on the big day.

Thankfully, this story has the ending everyone was hoping for. After being found and brought back to his family, Alfie visited our Carrara hospital for a thorough health check.

Despite his big adventure and a few worried loved ones, we're delighted to report that he's doing well! 💙

🐍 Not every snake bite leaves an obvious mark... but your dog’s behaviour can tell you something is wrong.

Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

🐾 Sudden collapse, even if they seem to bounce back quickly
🐾 Weakness, wobbliness, or trouble walking
🐾 Tremors, shaking, or dilated pupils
🐾 Dark or bloody urine
🐾 Bleeding from the nose, mouth, or bite site

⚠️ Trust your instincts. If you think your dog may have been bitten by a snake, don't wait to "see how they go." Every minute counts.

As the weather warms up and we spend more time outdoors with our dogs, it's a good time to remember that stick play can carry serious risks.

Last year, a dog named Bessie was brought to our hospital after a stick penetrated the back of her mouth while she was playing fetch. Thankfully, she received emergency treatment and made a great recovery, but her case serves as an important reminder that what seems like a harmless game can quickly become a life-threatening emergency.

🪵 Sticks can splinter, puncture the mouth or throat, and cause severe internal injuries if a dog lands on them the wrong way.

Instead of sticks, consider using purpose-made fetch toys designed to be safer for your dog to carry and retrieve.

A little extra caution can go a long way in keeping your adventures fun, safe and injury-free 💙

🐍 As the weather warms up, snakes become more active and so do the risks for our pets.

Dogs are naturally curious, which can put them in danger of snake bites.

⚠️ If you notice sudden weakness, wobbliness, trembling, or even collapse followed by “apparent recovery,” seek emergency vet care immediately.

Some patients arrive at our hospital weighing less than a block of chocolate 🍫

This tiny kitten, just one week old and weighing only 120 grams, was dropped into the care of AES Canberra.

When our Operations Manager, Geoff, arrived at the hospital that morning, he was greeted by the tiny patient and quickly got to work, syringe-feeding milk replacer to ensure the kitten had some much-needed nourishment before continuing on to Canberra Street Cat Alliance.

Sometimes the smallest patients make the biggest impression 💙

We're happy to report the little one has since been transferred and is doing well so far.

🐾 WHEN PLAYTIME ENDS WITH A TRIP TO EMERGENCY! 🐾

Meet beautiful Frankie, a one-year-old Staffy who belongs to our wonderful CCR, Tamika. ❤️

Like any energetic young Staffy, Frankie loves a good game with her ball — but after a recent play session, Tamika noticed that Frankie had developed a sore leg and wasn’t quite herself.

Knowing something wasn’t right, Frankie came in to Animal Emergency Service Tanawha for a check-up.

🩺 Frankie first had a thorough consultation and examination with our veterinary team to assess her sore leg and determine where the pain was coming from. She was given pain relief to keep her comfortable, but because we needed a closer look at what was happening beneath the surface, the next step was X-rays.

To allow us to position her correctly and obtain clear, diagnostic images without causing additional pain or stress, Frankie was placed under a general anaesthetic while her X-rays were taken.

X-rays can be incredibly valuable when investigating lameness, helping our vets assess the bones and joints for injuries or abnormalities that can’t always be identified from an examination alone.

Frankie was closely monitored by our team throughout her anaesthetic and recovery — with plenty of extra love for one of our own AES family members. 🥰🐶

If your pet suddenly becomes lame, is reluctant to put weight on a leg, appears painful or just isn’t moving normally, it’s always worth having them checked. Sometimes what starts as a simple “sore leg” needs a little more investigation to find the cause.

💚 Because they can’t tell us where it hurts — but they can show us.

🚨 TICK PARALYSIS WARNING – PLEASE CHECK YOUR PETS! 🚨

We are currently seeing a high number of tick paralysis cases, and we want to remind pet owners just how important prevention, daily tick searches and early action can be. 🐾

Paralysis ticks can cause serious, life-threatening illness, and affected pets can deteriorate quickly.

🔎 Signs to watch for include:
• Weakness or wobbliness, particularly in the back legs
• Changes to their bark or meow
• Retching, gagging, coughing or vomiting
• Difficulty swallowing
• Excessive drooling
• Changes in breathing or increased effort
• Lethargy or reluctance to move
• Collapse in severe cases

🛡️ PREVENTION IS YOUR PET’S BEST PROTECTION

Keep your pet up to date with a reliable tick preventative and make sure doses are given on time. Missing or delaying a dose can leave your pet vulnerable.

Even pets on prevention should have a thorough tick search every day. Run your fingertips slowly over the entire body, paying particular attention around the head, neck, ears, lips, under the collar, between the toes and other hidden areas.

⚠️ ACT QUICKLY!
If you find a tick or notice any signs that could indicate tick paralysis, contact a veterinarian immediately. Don’t wait to see if your pet improves—early veterinary treatment can make a significant difference.

❤️ Prevention. Daily searches. Early action. Three simple steps that could save your pet’s life.

KEEPING PETS & THEIR PEOPLE TOGETHER THROUGH THE TOUGHEST MOMENTS ❤️

At Animal Emergency Service Tanawha, we’re proud to be an Open Hospital — because when your pet is sick or injured, we believe keeping them connected with the people they love can make a real difference.

We understand that visiting an emergency hospital can be stressful and emotional for both pets and their families. Our Open Hospital philosophy is designed to keep pets and their people together during parts of the treatment process whenever it is safe and appropriate to do so.

🩺 What does being an Open Hospital mean?

In many situations, we welcome owners behind the scenes and to stay with their pets during procedures such as blood collection, IV catheter placement and some diagnostic procedures.

Having their favourite person nearby can help pets feel calmer, safer and more secure during what can otherwise be an unfamiliar and stressful experience. 🐶🐱

It also gives owners the opportunity to see the care their pet is receiving, ask questions and better understand their treatment plan and what happens behind the scenes.

We believe this transparency helps build trust, stronger relationships and collaborative care between our veterinary team and the families we support.

🏥 And if your pet needs to stay in hospital?

We encourage visits in most circumstances because we know just how comforting a familiar voice, gentle pat or cuddle can be while a pet is recovering. ❤️

There may be times when a pet’s condition, an emergency procedure or the needs of other critically ill patients mean access needs to be temporarily limited — patient safety and care will always come first.

At Animal Emergency Service Tanawha, our goal is to provide compassionate, high-quality emergency care while keeping pets and their people connected whenever possible.

❤️ Because when they’re facing a tough moment, having their favourite person beside them really does make a difference

🐾 A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO OUR WONDERFUL WILDLIFE CARERS 🐾

This precious little ringtail possum was brought into the clinic after being hit by a car. Once assessed and given the care they needed, they were transferred into the capable hands of an experienced wildlife carer.

We are incredibly grateful to the dedicated wildlife carers who give their time, love and expertise to rehabilitate injured and orphaned native animals. Their tireless work gives vulnerable wildlife like this little possum the best possible chance of recovery and, hopefully, a return to the wild. 🌿💚

You can help protect our wildlife too! Please slow down when driving—particularly around dawn, dusk and at night—and always stop safely to check the pouch of any deceased marsupial. If you find injured or orphaned wildlife, contact your local wildlife rescue organisation or veterinary clinic for assistance.

Thank you to our wildlife carers for everything you do—our native animals are so lucky to have you! 🐾

🦘💛 A TINY SURVIVOR WITH A BIG WILL TO LIVE

This precious little joey was brought into our hospital after his mum was tragically hit by a car.

Although his mum could not be saved, her joey was found alive and safely brought to us for assessment and care. Thanks to the quick actions of the kind person who stopped to help, this little one now has a chance to grow stronger and continue his journey with an experienced wildlife carer.

🚗 If you see a kangaroo or other wildlife that has been hit, please stop—but only if it is safe to do so. Call your local wildlife rescue organisation or veterinary clinic for advice. A quick pouch check by an experienced or confident rescuer could save a joey’s life.

📞 See injured or orphaned wildlife? Please don’t drive past—make the call. Your actions could save a life.
