🦷 SENIOR HORSE? DON’T FORGET THEIR TEETH! 🐴
As horses age, their teeth undergo significant changes. The reserve crown shortens, enamel decreases and chewing becomes less efficient — increasing the risk of dental disease.
Common problems in older horses include:
🦷 Periodontal disease
🦷 Gaps between teeth (diastemata)
🦷 Dental caries
🦷 Abnormal wear & “smooth mouth”
🦷 EOTRH
The tricky part? Horses are incredibly stoic. They can have significant dental disease without showing obvious signs.
Keep an eye out for:
✔️ Quidding
✔️ Weight loss or poor condition
✔️ Slow eating
✔️ Bad breath
✔️ Facial swelling or nasal discharge
✔️ Changes in behaviour
✔️ Or simply… being overdue for a dental!
The most common sign of dental disease is often NO obvious signs at all.
🦷 Regular veterinary dental examinations are especially important for senior horses.
