I know a few clients have been noticing I’m a bit flat lately. Today is the 9th anniversary of the death of the dog who started it all: the true Founder of In The Pink, Fergal the Dobermann. He died aged 7 from a hereditary heart defect, and his nephew, Seamus, died from the same cause two years later, aged 8. Now I’m facing heartbreak again as the dog who took up the mantle Fergal and Seamus left him, Bash the Azawakh, is deteriorating from a hereditary spinal defect. He’s only 5. So you’re right, I’m not myself. But I am trying my best to be, for his sake ❤️.

Sometimes, our dogs have fears we can’t explain. But have we considered epigenetics? This is when something which dramatically affects an individual actually causes a change to their DNA which can be passed on to their descendants. In 2014, Dias and Ressler taught male mice to fear a certain scent. They then used their s***m to artificially inseminate females they had never met, who had not had that experience. The resulting children AND grandchildren were all overly sensitive to that particular scent. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

Clients often look surprised when I get them to focus more on their hand signals than voice commands when teaching a dog something new. The primary reason is because dogs are more sensitive to body language than speech… but it’s also useful WHEN THE POOR TRAINER LOSES HER VOICE!!!!!!!!!!
All communications may need to be conducted via text for a few days…

We had such a big Life Skills Class on Sunday afternoon and I was SO proud of how well everyone did ❤️. This group includes young and old, novice and advanced, anxious and aggressive… and yet we all pulled together a beautiful “impression of sanity” in the all-too-brief sunshine!
