What I love about these two photos is that they so clearly depict that it is the learner (in this case, Primrose) who decides what is reinforcing, not the teacher (in this case, me.) I am holding up a treat in my right hand as I ask her to “sit pretty.” I happen to also be holding a blue ball in my left hand. Clearly the treat is the current reward on offer. Can you guess what Primrose would prefer??

Prim says, “stuff your treat up your left nostril and throw me the ball, Mum!”
I don’t remember if I realised this on the day, but seeing the photos is a good reminder for all of us to play close attention to our animals when we are training.

Fairdinkum (the new guy...yes I named him Fairdinkum) = Fairdinks, Fairdinkum Dog, Dinks, Dinky, Dinky Dog, Stinky Dinky, baby shark, end stage emphysema (he groans a lot lol 😂,) White Devil, El Diablo (the devil in Spanish), The Dinkinator, the Bull Terrorist, The Destroyer, Egg head, Yolko, eggy deg, and occasionally, omfg 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️😂 love him though

Of all the doggy clients I saw today, this one was definitely the sharpest! 🦔🦔🦔 Picked this little monotreme up off frenchs Forest Rd on the way to a clients house, uninjured but would have been a very flat echidna if he’d stayed where he was. Then borrowed said clients bathtub whilst we had our training session with Buzz the Labrador, and then dropped little spike off at where he will be safe and sound until a carer from can collect him and release him into a safe space 🥰🥰 cutest lil guy ever 😍😍

Guess who is the (handsome) face of this brand new cat food....??!!! If you guess Sangha, you’d be right 😍😍🐱
Sangha is on the packaging for all the treats and adult food, plus he will be in all the advertising material just like the video below 😍😍🥰🥰
Training Sangha to work on set and be comfortable on set is the number 1 priority! So Sangha practices going to new busy places often and practices his tricks. On set, there are often lots of people (cameraman, lighting people, producers, directors etc.) as well as lots of big clunky equipment, but Sangha takes it all in his stride, and of course gets lots of yummy chimken for being such a good boi 🥰

THE LEARNER DECIDES WHAT’S REINFORCING!

Thinking outside the treat pouch is an integral part of being a good trainer. There are many dogs that at one time or another will not find treats reinforcing. This is even true of very food driven dogs. Sometimes there will just be something in the environment that the dog finds more reinforcing than food, often to the point where they show little or no interest in treats at all.

But don’t despair! If your dog / cat / bird / horse / alligator / unicorn isn’t motivated by food on a particular day or in a particular environment, there are plenty of other available reinforcers at your disposal! The most important thing to remember is that the learner decides what is reinforcing, not the teacher. Shoving hotdog into your dog’s mouth doesn’t necessarily mean you are reinforcing a behaviour.

Bazil the bulldog (remember him?) does a great job at showing me that hot dog wasn’t reinforcing for him in this particular moment. As we worked on being comfortable with husbandry procedures (cleaning ears and feet,) Bazil told me in no uncertain terms where to shove my hotdog, and that he would much prefer to lick / eat / chew his ear wax and foot fungus off the (pet safe) wet wipe.... Thank you Bazil for the lesson 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️😅

Whilst there are countless occasions of when I have used non-food reinforcers when training an animal, I thought I’d list some of my favourite highlights, enjoy 😂😂

- access to eating and rolling in cat p**p on a walk (Rosie Mc bark bark)
- access to eating horse p**p 💩 (Ruby)
- access to rolling in dead animal carcass (like literally all of my dogs at one time or another)
- access to slurping p**p directly out of a baby cow’s bum like it was a Mr. Whippy machine 🍦💩 (there seems to be a running theme here...🤔)
- and now, licking foot fungus and ear wax off of a wet wipe, delicious 😋
