This morning’s Sunrise photo at Pulpit Rock, Blackheath.
Pulpit Rock has just been re-opened after being closed to the public for 6 years following the 2019 bushfires.
The site has been restored really nicely and the views are amazing as ever.
I was there this morning with the Ask Roz Blue Mountains contributor’s group. We followed up with breakfast and coffee at the Victoria and Albert Guesthouse where we were treated with the most amazing hospitality.

I did a call-out today to catch a Highlands Copperhead and it turns out the customer is a Blessington fan!!

He had the Northern Territory state collection watch while I had my original Blue Tongue watch on.

I couldn’t go without grabbing a photo with the Highlands Copperhead safely caught and in the bag.

We are pretty lucky in Australia!
Here in this wide brown land we are blessed with sun, surf, sand and SNAKES!

Australia is the only continent on Earth that boasts more venomous species than non-venomous species of snake!

In Australia we have about three thousand people bitten by snakes each year. Out of those we only have one or two fatalities annually. I would love to see us bring that down to zero, and there’s honestly no reason why we can’t. My goal is to see Australia eliminate snake bite deaths completely.
How can we do this?
There are two main ways that are really simple.

1. Leave snakes alone if you see them. I’ve written about this many times before so I won’t go into too much detail here but I’m sure if you’ve followed me for any length of time you’d have heard me say to leave snakes alone and they will leave you alone! It’s the golden rule.

2. Be prepared with the correct snake bite first aid and know how to implement it if needed.

This is the reason I’m making this post.
The correct first aid treatment for snake bite for all Australian snakes is known as the “Pressure and Immobilisation Technique”
It’s very simple and extremely effective!
Since the technique was developed it has had a 100% success rate for all people who have implemented it correctly and in a timely manner.
Just like all Australian children should be taught to swim I believe that all Australians should learn snake bite first aid and should have a first aid kit handy, particularly to carry with you when you’re outdoors as well as at home or in the car.

I have bought a heap of these simple and lightweight snake bite first aid kits to make available to you at a very affordable price.
Like I said, I want to see the day when we have no more snake bite fatalities in this country and it can come down to something as simple as having a snake bite first aid kit handy should the unlikely event occur and you are bitten.
In the kit there are two bandages with indicators to help you attain the correct tension, it also has a gauze swab and a thermal blanket.
Finally in the kit is a simple set of instructions on how to apply the pressure and immobilisation technique. Please familiarise yourself with these instructions so that you know what to do already should a bite occur and keep the instructions inside the kit so you can reference them if needed.

Reminder: Tiger Snakes are not aggressive.

I probably should add, I don’t recommend that you pick up a Tiger Snake (or any snake) and handle it like I’m doing here. I have had years of experience handling snakes. You haven’t! Don’t do it!

I’m sorry about the graphic images but sadly these are the types of photos I get sent sometimes.
A few weeks ago a lady called me to come look for a snake that had been seen in her yard. I couldn’t find the snake though I cleared out a whole heap of weeds from the side of the property where the snake had been seen.

Today the lady’s gardener was at the house cleaning up the garden and he found the snake. Instead of taking a photo of it while it was alive to have it identified and possibly have me come out to remove it, the gardener decided that the best course of action would be to kill the snake. His reasoning, apparently he thought it was a Brown Snake.
Honestly it doesn’t matter what kind of snake it is.
It was completely unnecessary to kill it. Not only that, but illegal, and potentially (if it were a brown snake) dangerous to the person interfering with it.
In this case it was a Yellow-Faced Whip Snake (Demansia psammophis) which is a mildly venomous species, very shy and no bother to anyone.
But sadly, ignorance and fear prevailed again in this instance.

If you have a snake in your yard, if you’re a gardener, landscaper or a person who works outdoors, please be mindful that snakes are around, they are protected by law and you should not kill them under any circumstances.
