Aubreen Veterinary Hospital We are a family owned small animal veterinary hospital on Sydney's Northern Beaches 💕

Our clinic was founded in 1983 by Dr Gary Boston, who established its reputation as a caring, honest, and first-class veterinary clinic right from the beginning. Dr Margot Horder joined him in 1994 before becoming a partner owner with him in 2000. Employing many vets along the journey, including the lovable late Dr Hugh Southwood, our clinic entered a new era in 2015 when Dr Lewis Hunt & Dr Caroline Wood, both of who were working at the clinic already & well established in the local life, took over ownership. Meet George 🐾
George came to see us earlier this year with epilepsy, significant anxiety, and concern over his liver enzymes.
He had experienced several seizures over the previous year and was taking multiple medications to control them. His family was understandably concerned about balancing seizure control with his liver health, whilst also helping him feel calmer and more settled in everyday life.
Dr Caroline carefully revised his medication plan, while continuing appropriate conventional anti-seizure treatment, and introduced an integrative support plan that included:
- A personalised herbal formula for anxiety, nervous-system support, and to reduce seizure likelihood
- MCT oil to support brain health
- Milk thistle extract for liver support
- A fresh, wholefood diet, balanced with appropriate vitamins and minerals
- Regular blood tests and seizure monitoring
Over the following months, George’s family noticed that he seemed brighter and less anxious. He could relax more easily and tolerated being left alone—something he had previously found very difficult.
By his last review, George had gone 20 weeks without a seizure, his longest-ever seizure-free interval.
George's story shows what integrative care can offer: thoughtful medication management combined with nutrition, herbal medicine, and support for the whole patient.
We’re delighted to see you doing so well, George! 💚

Meet Paddy — such a handsome boy and such a good patient! 🐾

He was with us this week for his routine dental scale and polish, and just look at the difference! 🦷✨

The sparkling teeth make great before-and-after photos, but the most important part of a professional veterinary dental happens out of sight. While Paddy was safely under general anaesthesia, we thoroughly examined and cleaned beneath the gumline, where periodontal disease develops and progresses. We also took dental x-rays to ensure his tooth roots were still healthy.

Regular dental check-ups and professional cleans help us detect problems early, maintain healthy teeth and gums, and protect our pets’ comfort and overall wellbeing.

This golden senior is Titan, an American Staffy who has suffered from allergic skin disease for a very long time. He was improving due to a multimodal approach of nutrition, medicated washes, anti-itch medications, topical anti-inflammatories, & moisturisers, but not as much as we'd hoped. In July Dr Emily took biopsies and sent them for culture and analysis - to our concern they came back as a multi-resistant bacterial infection, a condition that is becoming increasingly common in our companion pets.

Titan was started on a high dose of the only antibiotic the bacteria seemed sensitive to, alongside intense antibacterial washing & conditioning, in order to prevent further resistance from developing. We are so pleased to see now that Titan is the best he's been in a long time and his skin has almost completely healed 💕

Meet Googlu! 🐾

Googlu came to see Dr Caroline for a nutrition assessment ealier in the year after experiencing intermittent digestive problems since puppyhood.

Despite eating a good-quality fresh food diet he regularly ate grass and would occasionally develop abnormal stools. More recently he had begun waking his family during the night to go outside. He was also licking his paws and had developed mild irritation between his toes.

A single-protein fresh food turkey diet recommended by another vet had initially helped, but his digestive signs gradually returned.

Googlu was otherwise a bright, healthy, and beautifully lean young dog. Rather than immediately assuming he had a food allergy, Dr Caroline considered several possible contributors—including an imbalance in his gut microbiome, transient food intolerances, and intestinal parasites.

She developed an initial plan that included:

• A short course of parasite treatment
• A targeted probiotic to support his gut microbiome
• Chamomile tea to help soothe his digestive tract
• A medicinal mushroom blend for general health support
• Gentle topical treatment for his irritated paws
• Gradual introduction of additional proteins once his digestion had settled

Further testing and a faecal microbiota transplant (FMT) remained options if his symptoms continued.

When Googlu returned this month for his titre testing and vaccinations, his family reported that he had responded extremely well. He was tolerating multiple protein sources, had experienced no further digestive upsets or mucoid stools, and had stopped eating grass. He no longer required any supplements.

Googlu’s story is a lovely example of Dr Caroline’s integrative approach: looking beyond a single symptom or ingredient and considering nutrition, the gut microbiome, parasites, skin health and the individual dog as a whole.

We’re so pleased you’re feeling better, Googlu! 💚

We’re excited to announce our new collaboration with .dogrescue to care for their rescue pups. This week sweet Maisie came in for desexing, she was such a lovely girl and did really well during her day in hospital. We’re over the moon to know that once she’s fully recovered, she’ll be heading to her forever home!

We are in awe of the wonderful volunteers who dedicate their time to these dogs and delighted they share our ethos of integrative veterinary care and whole‑food nutrition. It’s a privilege to work with them and support their mission🩷🩷🐾

BIRD FLU UPDATE: What to do if you find a sick or injured bird

You may have seen that H5 avian influenza, also known as bird flu, has now been detected in NSW.

At this stage, authorities are monitoring the situation closely. The current advice is not to panic, but to be sensible and avoid handling sick or dead birds.

If you find a sick, injured, or orphaned native bird such as a lorikeet, cockatoo, kookaburra, magpie, pigeon, or duck, please call us first for advice before bringing the bird into the clinic. We can help guide you on the safest next steps.

However, if you find a sick or dead migratory seabird — for example a giant petrel, skua, albatross, shearwater or other unusual seabird on the beach or shoreline — please do NOT touch it or take it to a vet.

Instead:

1. Keep people and pets away
2. Take a photo or video if it is safe to do so
3. Note the exact location
4. Call the **Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888**

Please also contact the hotline if you see multiple sick or dead birds in one area, or any bird showing unusual neurological signs such as tremors, wobbliness, circling, weakness, or being unusually easy to approach.

For your own safety, avoid direct contact with sick or dead wildlife unless you have been advised it is safe to do so.

If you are unsure what to do, you are welcome to call us so we can help point you in the right direction.

Is your pet finding winter a little harder?

Cold weather can make joint stiffness and arthritis signs more obvious — slower mornings, shorter walks, trouble with stairs, or hesitation jumping into the car.

Aubreen now offers therapeautic laser therapy and acupuncture as part of our integrative mobility and pain support options.

Book a winter mobility consult and let’s help your pet move more comfortably this season. Appointments available to book online (www.aubreenvet.com) or give us a call.

We believe that true veterinary medicine is about more than treating symptoms - it’s about understanding the whole animal, their lifestyle, and the bond you share.

Why do we often use human supplements for pets? 🌿

It surprised some people, but not every supplement we use in cats & dogs is made specifically for animals.

Sometimes we choose carefully selected human grade products because:

🌸 The product quality is clearer
🌸 The active ingredient amount is easier to verify
🌸 The manufacturing standards are stronger
🌸 The formulation is cleaner, with fewer unnecessary flavours or fillers
🌸 The company provides better information about testing, purity, and sourcing

This doesn't mean all human products are automatically better. Many products designed for people are unsafe for animals, and can include potentially dangerous ingredients like xylitol, Vitamin D, iron, and certain essential oils. Every species also has a unique metabolism and tolerance of different drugs.

When chosen carefully, and dosed appropriately, human grade supplements can be a useful part of an integrative treatment plan.

We never use the most trendy product; we choose the safest, cleanest, and most effective option for your pet 🐱🐶🐰
