Conures & Caiques! Bird behaviour their instinctive needs is completely foreign to most people, and it can lead to a lot of miscommunications & understanding. Most people grow up with a kitten or a puppy or both and have at least a general idea of how to care for them properly. Dogs and cats have been domesticated for hundreds of years; it is easier for us to “read” them and while parrots have been domesticated to some extent, their instinct is to act first think later. As prey animals, parrots react very differently to situations than dogs and cats. We strongly believe that education is key to providing parrots with safe and happy and loving homes that readily cater for more than just their basic needs. We also believe that educating the new & existing bird owners of their needs and understanding them makes for a much happier parrot & owners bond, and in turn, there will be way fewer parrots up for rehoming or adoption hopefully. While Avian Veterinarians are an especially important part of our bird’s health, some seem to put all birds under the same big umbrella as that is what they have been taught, but different birds have different needs like Conures & Caiques are instinctively cavity sleepers and not perch sleepers like a lot of others are as well as their diets are all different as well This site Beaks & Feathers Aviaries has a sister Page Beaks & Feathers Aviaries Exotic Parrots we will be updating and transferring files our website https://www.beaksandfeathersaviaries.com/ also into our bird pages and is largely an educational site with the files that we use quite often in our groups

Some of the Parrots we have, Alexandrines, Amazons, Caiques, (Conures:- Sun, Pied Sun, Jendaya, Peach Fronted, Golden Capped, Crimson Bellied, Black-Capped, Pearly, Rose Crowned and most of the Green Cheek Conures also in blue and Jade

‼️The Bond Doesn’t Begin With a Syringe‼️

🌺With spring arriving, many people start thinking about welcoming a bird into their family. Over the past few weeks, we have already had an influx of people reaching out after purchasing unweaned birds, often because they have been told that hand-feeding a baby bird themselves is the “best way to bond”.

While the intention is understandable, hand-feeding is not a shortcut to creating a strong relationship and it comes with significant risks.🚫

✋️Feeding baby birds is a delicate process that requires knowledge and experience. Formula consistency, temperature, feeding technique, crop health, hygiene, and maintaining the correct environmental temperature are all critical. It is also essential to recognise the early warning signs when something isn’t right, as problems can quickly become life threatening in a young bird.

In the wild, baby birds naturally grow up, develop independence, and eventually leave their parents. Their bond with their parents is not based solely on being fed it is built through safety, communication, learning, and trust. A strong relationship with your bird is developed through the thousands of interactions that happen throughout their life: respecting their body language, providing positive experiences, teaching them new skills, offering choice and control, and becoming someone they feel safe with.🦜

💚A bird does not need you to hand feed them to love you. They need you to understand them, advocate for them, and build trust with them every day.

If you are considering adding a bird to your family this spring, we encourage you to research carefully, choose ethical breeders or rescues, and ensure your new companion is fully weaned and ready for their next chapter.👈

REPEAT AFTER ME: SEEDS ARE HEALTHY!
If you’ve ever been on a bird group, you have heard someone rattle off the myth that “seed is unhealthy” or “seed has no nutrition.” I see these claims everyday and I can tell you that, with even a 2-minute google search, you can immediately see the nutritional value in seeds. By nature, seeds have to capture and store beneficial nutrients to jumpstart plant growth, since seeds don’t yet have leaves to perform photosynthesis and generate their own energy. These storage nutrients are also packed into seeds along with other beneficial components to make seeds a vital part of the diverse whole food diet. Should your bird be on an all-seed diet? Absolutely not! But they shouldn’t be on a mostly pelleted diet either as too much of any one food item is never recommended. Diversify your bird’s diet and include a healthy mix of seeds as part of the evening meal after they’ve had fresh foods during the day. Soaking and sprouting seeds offers a different set of nutrients and is also beneficial… these should be offered along with fresh fruits and veg each morning. More options at the shop link in our bio.

It doesn't cost a fortune to have and keep a Parrot, and feed it a natural diet full of nutrients with healthy foods 🥰

🌱🦜 IT’S FORAGING FRIDAY!
💰 Feeding fresh doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
One of the biggest misconceptions about feeding parrots a diverse whole-food diet is that it costs a fortune. It doesn’t—especially when you shop strategically. And it’s cheaper than most pellets… and a heck of a lot healthier, too!

🌱 SPROUTING IS ONE OF THE MOST AFFORDABLE WAYS TO ADD FRESH FOOD.
A small amount of dry seed can produce a surprisingly large amount of living, fresh food after soaking and sprouting. Lentils, mung beans, millet, buckwheat, wheat, quinoa, and other sproutable seeds are inexpensive, store well, and can be sprouted in small batches as needed.

And remember: your bird only eats a small amount!
🥕 Instead of buying large bags of produce, focus on foods you can purchase individually or in small quantities:
🫑 1 bell pepper
🥕 1 carrot
🍐 1 pear
🍎 1 apple
🥭 1 mango
🥒 1 zucchini or yellow squash
🌱 A handful of green beans or peapods
🥬 A few Brussels sprouts
🍠 1 small sweet potato (yes, raw!)
🫐 A small container of berries
🌿 Small bunches of leafy greens

One pepper can contribute to several meals. One carrot can last multiple days. A few Brussels sprouts, green beans, berries, and peapods can provide even more variety without buying more food than your bird can eat.

🌈 The goal isn’t to buy a lot of each food—it’s to buy SMALL AMOUNTS of MANY foods.
Combine individually purchased produce with inexpensive sprouts, soaked seeds, herbs, edible flowers, and other whole foods, and you can create tremendous dietary diversity for surprisingly little money.

💡 Shop smart. Buy small. Sprout often. Rotate constantly.
Your bird gets variety, texture, moisture, colour, phytonutrients, and opportunities to forage—without a huge grocery bill.

🌱🦜 Fresh food is affordable food.

Worth taking note of for avian nutrition

If you think this is “gourmet” food for birds, you might want to rethink your approach to avian nutrition.

I’m was invited to speak at another avicultural event on the “evolution of avian nutrition” which has me looking back and forward a great deal. Much of what has developed of the years has been an attempt at convenience… but there is nothing convenient about the keeping of the many different species we keep.

To truly know birds is to know that they require a diversity of food items that each have their own nutrient matrix, which can include hundreds of different bioactive compounds… many of which are lost during the processing of extruded pellets. Because of this significant loss, synthetic vitamins and other compounds are added to those foods in an effort to make them complete. But they aren’t.

Whole food items are critical to avian health and longevity. They can survive on ultraprocessed foods for a time, and some longer than others, but survival in our care shouldn’t be enough. Thriving should be a constant goal and satisfying not only physiological needs, but also mental/behavioral needs should be just as important.

I see many attempt to validate reductionist diets by saying “I’ve had good results” or “my bird always has eaten this” but how should we be measuring success? Birds are complex organisms that should be treated as birds, and that means treating them as organisms that have evolved to consume diverse items through a variety of foraging behaviors for most of every day.

At the Avian Nutrition Summit we hosted this past weekend, we heard from professionals who care for a wide diversity of species and all agree on a central point: You cannot beat, by any measure, real, living whole food.

Hi everyone, waiting for updates on our birds. Group acceptance for joining or posts.
Thank you for your patients
I have been struck down with some sort of virus that's managed to extract every bit of energy out of me.
My wife is trying her very best to keep everything going
Up Date
It seems after a lot of X-rays and Chest CT scans, I have pneumonia.
We just have to determine the best course of action.
Meanwhile, my wife is doing a great job of doing everything.
We are getting there just a bit slower.
There are some Sun conure and green cheek conure eggs starting to hatch.
All are allocated in the order of the accepted quotes we sent out and have been accepted with deposits.
Thank you for your patience and understanding :)
