𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗛𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗢𝗔𝗠 𝗕𝗩𝗦𝗰 𝗛𝗼𝗻. 𝗗𝗩𝗦𝗰 𝗙𝗔𝗡𝗭𝗖𝗩𝗦 - Reflecting on REC's history, we acknowledge Professor David Hutchins “Prof”, whose contribution to equine veterinary medicine helped shape both our practice and the wider profession. A respected surgeon and medicine clinician, educator and mentor, Professor Hutchins influenced countless veterinarians throughout his career.

Among those he inspired were two of REC's current partners, Dr Jonathan Lumsden and Dr Leanne Begg, who both completed their Internships in 1988 under Professor Hutchins. Professor Hutchins' passion for excellence, dedication to horse welfare and commitment to mentoring future generations remains an important part of REC's story. Today, we proudly honour his legacy and the enduring impact he has had on our team, our profession and the equine community.

𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗰𝘆 𝗦𝘆𝗸𝗲𝘀 - As we celebrate our 75th anniversary we remember REC Equine Specialists began with the vision of one extraordinary veterinarian – Dr Percy Sykes. A veterinarian whose influence on Australian racing is still felt today. After arriving in Australia in 1951, Percy established P.E. Sykes & Partners and helped transform equine veterinary care through pioneering innovations including blood testing, endoscopy, ultrasonography and arthroscopy. Known as the trusted vet and close confidant of racing icon T.J. Smith, Percy worked with some of Australia's most famous racehorses. His passion for advancing horse health laid the foundation for everything we do today. Decades on, we're proud to continue the legacy he started.

🐴 Founded in 𝟭𝟵𝟱𝟭 as P.E. Sykes & Partners, the practice quickly established itself as a leader in equine veterinary care under the vision of Dr Percy Sykes. By the 𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟬𝘀, the team was growing rapidly attracting a small group of aspiring talented young equine veterinarians and by the 𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟬𝘀 a purpose-built hospital was opened in Church Lane, Randwick, supporting an expanding team of veterinarians covering racing stables, stud farms and spelling farms across Sydney and beyond.

🐴 In 𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟴, the practice entered a new era as Randwick Equine Centre, relocating to a purpose-built hospital adjacent to the William Inglis & Sons sales complex in Randwick.

🐴 Over the following decades, the practice continued to grow its specialist expertise, training programs and referral services, while embracing innovations including laser surgery, laparoscopy and advanced arthroscopic procedures.

🐴 The next chapter began in 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟭 with the opening of our purpose-built Horsley Park hospital and the launch of REC Specialist Equine Centre, an industry leading facility bringing together advanced imaging, specialist surgery and intensive care, while continuing the legacy that began 75 years ago

𝗥𝗘𝗖 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿 - Our team of vets and nurses have been hitting the road, with valuable assistance from the team at Southern Highlands Equine Centre , working through this year's yearling survey radiographs. Despite some chilly conditions, the team has powered on! ❄️

These screening radiographs play an important role in identifying developmental orthopaedic changes early.

📸So far over 10,000 survey radiographic images have been assessed and reviewed by our veterinarians.

Promising new airway surgery for ‘roarers’! Laryngeal Dynamic Neuroprosthesis (DNP) is a recent advancement in the surgical management of recurrent laryngeal neuropathy, commonly referred to as a ‘roarer’. This latest surgical procedure is performed by REC Equine Specialists surgeons and combines a standard laryngoplasty (tie-back) with the latest selective muscle reinnervation techniques to enhance airway function during exercise long term.

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀! 🎂 Horses in Australia officially celebrate their birthday on the 1st of August, the date was chosen because it aligns with the start of the Southern Hemisphere breeding season. Luckily for our four legged friends they can celebrate their birthday twice, once on their official birthday and again their actual birth date. That sounds like the perfect excuse for twice as many carrots! 🥕🥕
