Newtown Neighbourhood Centre

Newtown Neighbourhood Centre 🏡 From housing support to community connection, Newtown Neighbourhood Centre is here for people doing it tough.

Together, we’re building a fairer, more inclusive Inner West. 💛 Newtown Neighbourhood Centre (NNC) aims to build an inclusive, resilient, self-reliant and creative community. The Centre provides community support services to the local community and in particular the disadvantaged groups such as the aged, people with disabilities, people who are homeless, people with mental illness, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and people on low incomes.

"It's no secret that homelessness has risen in the last 12 months."

Meet Tim, a director and treasurer on the NNC Board. He lives just outside Newtown, joined the board about a year ago, and the reason is simple: he sees what's happening on the streets of the Inner West and wanted to help do something about it.

His job is to make sure the money goes where it should, so more people can get off the streets and into a safe place to live.

We caught up with Tim at An Evening with NNC, our thank-you dinner for the Board, Champions and supporters who keep this place running. We're lucky to have him 💛

Something beautiful is coming to Camperdown, AND it’s giving back to our community 🎨💛 How good!

The Art of Becoming Together is a new exhibition from four incredible artists 👉 Joel Cunningham - Artist, manuela serje, Jimbo and Miriam Montgomery, and it opens at Chrissie Cotter Gallery this week.

The part that really moved us? 30% of ALL SALES will be donated directly to NNC to support crisis care, emergency housing and outreach for people experiencing homelessness in the Inner West. We’re beyond grateful.

Newtown's best-kept secret? The little pink library on Darley St 💗

It's our Street Library 📚 a tiny box packed with free books, sitting right outside 11–13 Darley St. Take one that catches your eye or leave one you've loved.

And it's a proper circular economy project ♻️ Built by our very own Christiane, painted with reclaimed paint from , using materials from , and installed free of charge by the legends at . Nothing new, everything loved.

Been meaning to start that novel? Consider this your sign 👀

R U OK? Day is next Thursday 10 September. But here’s the thing: the conversations that matter most usually don’t happen on the day everyone’s talking about them. They happen on a random Tuesday. Over a cuppa. In the pause after someone says “”yeah, I’m fine.””

That’s what we see at Newtown Neighbourhood Centre every week. Last year alone, 1,112 people came through Chat and Connect. Not because it was a special day, but because someone was there to ask, and then actually listen.

So this week, think about who you’d check in on. The neighbour you haven’t seen in a while. The mate who’s gone quiet. The person who’s always the one asking everyone else. Then ask them. Any day counts 💛

📣 SOMETHING SPECIAL NEXT THURSDAY 📣
Our One Stop Shop is opening its doors from 2–4pm for R U OK? Day, with support services all under one roof: Centrelink, our Boarding House Outreach team, DVNSW MOMO, Vinnies, PWDA, Orange Sky, OzHarvest, plus Service NSW, SLHD After Care, the Grow Program and StandBy Support joining us for the day. Everyone is welcome!

Big thanks to every service showing up, and to Inner West Council for backing the extra support pathways.

Whatever’s going on, you’re always welcome at 11–13 Darley Street.

For almost 50 years, this has been a place where everyone belongs. That hasn’t changed, and it’s not going to 🏡💛

We’ve just mapped out our plan for the next chapter, and we wanted to share it with the people who make it all possible: YOU.

It comes back to one thing we believe in deeply... ‘a just community which includes and acts’. From amplifying community voice, to programs that meet real needs, to strong partnerships (including our commitment to reconciliation and helping end rough sleeping in the Inner West), this is where we’re headed.

Swipe through to see what’s ahead 👉 However you’re part of NNC, be it volunteering, dropping in, donating, or just being a good neighbour - you’re part of this plan too.

Newtown, we’re SO glad you’re in it with us.

Some venues just serve drinks. Newtown Hotel serves the whole Newtown experience 🎉

Think endless drag nights, a welcome that stretches to every corner of the community, and a genuine commitment to the people who call these streets home, and that's including the ones sleeping rough on them.

As one of our Newtopian Champions, helps power our outreach work, where in 2024 our team and volunteers assisted 1,153 people sleeping rough across the Inner West.

So next time you're front row for a killer lip-sync or ordering "just one" schooner, know you're standing in a place that gives back to Newtown as fiercely as it parties 💃🍻
