You may have noticed we've been a little quiet lately. Our resident bunny Goose, who had been in palliative care for over a year, finally said goodbye and left for the rainbow bridge a few months ago.
It hit us so hard. She was such a special girl and although we knew the day was coming, we weren't ready. It was too painful to interact with the rabbit community for a while, so we quietly paused intakes for the boarding house to focus on recovery and healing.
Things have been getting easier as time passes. We are slowly opening up the boarder pens again, and it's been lovely seeing familiar and new faces come by.
We also have two new permanent residents who have recently joined the bun house: meet Takumi (the dog) and Tupac (the bunny)!
Takumi (Kumi for short) was found on the street, spent a month in the pound and then another month in rescue with H.A.A.R.T where he befriended his foster carer's pet bunny.
We'd always wanted a dog, but didn't want to risk putting the bunnies in potential danger. But when we saw the photo of the two of them snuggling on the rescue page we knew that this was our chance and sent in an application.
We got the call our application was accepted, and Goose unexpectedly passed away the next day. I think she knew we'd have a new friend to snuggle soon.
We weren't planning to adopt Tupac as well, but Kumi was so attached to him that we agreed it wasn't right to seperate them.
It's been an adjustment having a dog around the house, but they have settled in beautifully and were just what we needed ❤️
Tupac was love at first sight with Grommet, Gooses' grieving bondmate, and they have been inseparable since they met. Kumi has happily adopted Grommet as 'his' bunny as well, and seems to approve of Tupac's choice in men 🤣
Although Kumi is a pretty big boy with a very scary sounding bark, underneath it he's the most gentle, intuitive and loving goofy goober who wants nothing more than to cuddle and protect. He's also a livestock guardian breed which shows so clearly when it comes to the bunnies - he is always checking in to make sure they're OK, gets extremely distressed if one has to go to the vet, and cares for them so well.
He is undergoing training to help me with some of my medical conditions too, and is already making such a different to my health.
Obviously although Kumi is ok with all bunnies, not all bunnies are OK with dogs.
Right now all boarders are kept in dog free rooms that Kumi does not have access to. Kumi also stays outside during drop offs and pick ups, so bunnies won't have that extra level of stress of a dog trying to say hi while settling in/getting ready to go home.
However, we completely understand if this means some of you aren't able to stay with us anymore - the last thing we want is anybunny experiencing preventable stress. We are more than happy to recommend other, dog free boarding houses if needed.
We couldn't be more grateful to H.A.A.R.T and Kumi's foster mum for bringing these two perfect boys into our life, and helping us find joy and happiness again.
