Pets and bird flu (H5N1)
Yes, animals other than birds can be infected!
Cats are particularly susceptible and it is often FATAL to cats.
If you let your cat outdoors, now is the time to change that. Cats which are let outdoors are at a much higher risk of catching bird flu.
Dogs are also now recommended to be on lead while out on walks to minimise the risk of interacting with wildlife or finding dead animals.
If you find a dead animals, keep your pets away, do not touch it and call the Hotline on 1800 675 888

Many people have poultry or pet chickens which are sadly at a very high risk of contracting HPAI (bird flu).
Current recommendations to reduce the risk of H5N1 Avian Influenza entering your flock are:
-Prevent or limit contact between your birds and wild birds, including their feed and water sources. Moving feed and water inside a shelter can help prevent wild bird access.
-Keep area rodent free as much as possible.
-Keep sheds, yards, aviaries, and equipment clean.
-Limit visitors to your birds and ask essential visitors about recent contact with other poultry.
-Practise good hygiene: wash hands (soap and water) before and after handling birds, eggs, or equipment.
-Change into clean footwear before entering poultry areas.
-Keep basic records of bird movements or sales.
-Monitor your birds closely and report any unusual signs of disease or increased deaths to your veterinarian or local agriculture department.

With HPAI H5N1 making its way across the country, we have to take some extra precautions to keep our patients, pets, clients and staff safe.
If you find a sick or injured bird, please call the EAD hotline on 1800 675 888.
Please do not touch or bring the bird into the clinic.
If you are in need of veterinary advice for a pet bird, wildlife or poultry, please call us beforehand and we can assess the symptoms over the phone before your arrival.
We will be publishing more information in the coming weeks but if you would like to know more some great resources are:

Dear friends, clients and fur friends of Eurocoast.

We need to share an important update with our clinic community.

Kate has recently been diagnosed with an aggressive, inoperable liver cancer. Sadly, her prognosis is poor and this is an incredibly difficult time for Kate, Tara and their kids.

As you can understand, their focus right now is on treatment, spending time together and supporting one another through a very difficult road ahead.

That being said, in difficult times it is important to do what you love, and caring for people's beloved pets is one of those things for us. The clinic will remain open though we will be operating at a limited capacity at times. There will be times where appointment availability is limited and we appreciate your support and kindness as we navigate this.

Warm regards,
Kate, Tara and the Eurocoast Team
