So I sold the salon.

There’s obviously a lot more to that story and I’ll unpack it properly on the podcast, but weirdly the biggest thing this whole experience made me question wasn’t even owning the salon. It was mentoring.

I genuinely got to a point where I thought, why the f**k am I even doing this when so many people still want the cheat code? You can literally show people the reality of business, the time, the money, the stress, the decisions, the risk, the work that goes on behind the scenes, and there will still be people looking for the shortcut. Something easier, something faster, something that doesn’t require as much from them.

I am incredibly grateful for the amazing clients I’ve worked with, and for the genuine people in this industry who actually care, who want to do better and who are passionate about raising the standard. Those people are the reason I’ve loved doing this for as long as I have.

But I can’t keep being part of an industry that is helping create this epidemic of people who see pet businesses as an apparent easy pay cheque, with very little respect for what it actually takes to do the job properly.

Now that I’m not trying to sell you anything, I actually feel like I can say a lot of the things I probably held back on before. I’ll still share advice and talk about business, the pet industry and everything I’ve learnt along the way, but I’m not interested in packaging it up to make it sound easier or nicer than it is.

I think what I share from here is going to be a lot more candid, a lot more personal and probably a lot more opinionated. I’m not disappearing, I’m just changing what this looks like.

Little announcement 🤍

I’ve made the decision to close the mentoring side of my business, which means the option to work with me directly is officially coming to an end.

I’ve genuinely enjoyed every moment of this chapter. I’ve met some incredible people, made connections I know I’ll keep for a long time, watched businesses grow, watched people become more confident in themselves, and I’m so grateful to everyone who trusted me enough to let me into their business and ask for my advice.

Over time though, I’ve realised that I feel pulled towards a different purpose.

The more time I’ve spent in both the pet industry and the coaching space, the more I’ve found myself wanting to contribute to something bigger than helping individual businesses one at a time.

I also want to be honest about something that has been sitting with me for a while.

I’ve become really tired of seeing generic information being packaged and sold as expertise, people being encouraged into industries they probably shouldn’t be in, and people positioning themselves as coaches or experts without the experience, knowledge or accountability that should come with that.

At some point I had to ask myself whether continuing to operate in the coaching space meant I was also, in a small way, contributing to an industry I have some pretty big concerns about.

I still believe strongly in education, mentoring and business support. I just think there needs to be a much higher standard around who gives advice, what qualifies someone to give it, and what responsibility comes with influencing someone else’s business and livelihood.

The pet industry has a very similar problem, and that is where I feel increasingly drawn.

This is the type of thing losing you money, not just in the short term, but the long term as well

If it is taking you two days to reply to an enquiry because you are that busy, you are probably at the point where you need help

There is only so long someone is going to wait before they go somewhere else, especially when they are ready to book and just want an answer

What I would be more concerned about though, is being that busy and still feeling like you cannot afford to hire anyone, even for admin work

If the diary is full, the enquiries are coming in, you are run off your feet, but there is still no money there to bring in even a few hours of support, I would be looking at why

Being busy can make you feel like the business is doing really well, but if all that work still is not creating enough room to buy back some of your time, there is something in the business that needs looking at

And why do I share these little finds? I know where one of you is having an issue, multiple are

Casual reminder: being booked out doesn’t automatically mean your business is working for YOU

You’re allowed to want more profit
More space in your week
More freedom
More enjoyment
More time that actually feels like yours

A full diary is great, but it doesn’t have to be the thing you measure success by

Thought the only way to measure your success was by how busy you are? Nah… listen to my latest podcast episode for my own recent success epiphany 🙊

We’re looking at where your time is going, what you’re tolerating, what actually needs your attention and some of the little shifts that can completely change the way you run your business

We’ve already kicked off, but you can jump in whenever you like and catch up

It’s completely free inside the Facebook community.

One of the hardest parts of owning a business isn’t the money, the marketing or even the workload

It’s managing people

When you genuinely care about your team, it can be really bloody uncomfortable to tell someone their performance isn’t where it needs to be, their behaviour isn’t okay, or something simply needs to change

So we avoid it. We soften it. We tell ourselves we’ll give it another week

Meanwhile, we’re the ones carrying the frustration, picking up the slack and wondering why running a business feels so damn heavy.

I’ve had to learn this lesson very personally lately.

Having the hard conversation didn’t necessarily give me the outcome I expected, but it did give me clarity. And looking back, avoiding it would have cost me far more.

Your job as the business owner isn’t to keep everyone comfortable.

It’s to communicate clearly, protect the standards of your business and deal with things when they need to be dealt with.

This week on the Pet Industry Mentor Podcast, I’m talking about the importance of having hard conversations with your staff, what happens when you avoid them, and why someone reacting badly to a boundary doesn’t automatically mean you were wrong for setting it.

If there’s a conversation you’ve been putting off, this episode is for you 🎙️

It gets CRAZY tiring advocating for an industry that has more than half its population not even believing in what you do. Can’t sell a pet business? Laughable? Even being nasty?

If you believe your pet business can’t be sold, then I KNOW one of these two things about you is true

1) your business isn’t taken seriously, you see it is a job you have, you don’t believe in what you have created and maybe you don’t believe in yourself and that’s so disappointing to hear. This industry deserves credit where credit is due. The work you do is important and valued and you should feel that way. You are in control

2) your business isn’t set up properly. You don’t have systems, you don’t have structure, you don’t have profit. You created yourself a job you probably work 24/7 for that one day you’ll have to walk away from with nothing and you know it. So you are nasty to those who have a business actually worth something, and because it’s not your reality you refuse to believe it or cheer for someone else

The pet industry has enough difficulties to face and work through without people having a lack of belief that what they do isn’t worth anything, or industry members being nasty to those who do see it.

Your business can be fully booked, bringing in more revenue than it ever has, with money hitting the account every single day… and you can still find yourself wondering where the hell all of it actually went.

This is one of the biggest shifts I want pet business owners to make when they start thinking seriously about growth, because revenue is exciting to talk about, but revenue alone tells you very little about the health of your business.

You can have your biggest month ever and still have very little left once you account for wages, super, rent, products, software, insurance, merchant fees, GST, tax and all of the other expenses that come with actually delivering the service.

You can also look at a healthy bank balance and think you’re doing brilliantly, forgetting that a decent chunk of that money is already spoken for.

This is why knowing your numbers matters.

I don’t think every business owner needs to become obsessed with spreadsheets or understand accounting at an expert level, but because you should be able to look at your business and know what it costs to operate, what needs to be put aside, what your labour is costing you, what your margins look like and, most importantly, whether this business is actually making money for YOU.

I don’t care how impressive the revenue number looks on paper if you’re working your arse off, carrying all of the responsibility and still telling yourself there’s ‘nothing left’ to pay you at the end of the week.

A successful business isn’t just one that makes money.

It’s one that knows where that money goes, keeps enough of it, and eventually gives the person who built the damn thing something to show for it.
