Recieved a phone call this evening for a snake stuck in a gap next to the bathroom door in Nambour.

Upon arriving I noticed the tail sticking out. On closer inspection on how it was stuck it had wedged it's body between a bit of concrete and the wall.

After an hour of working on getting it out I finally manage to free this stunning weakly venomous Southern Dwarf Crowned Snake (Cacophis krefftii). After doing a health check of it, it was able to release it back into suitable habitat.

Dwarf Crowned Snakes are 1 of 3 crowned snakes and also the smallest of the 3 Crowned species found here on the Sunshine Coast.

These guys are a nocturnal, terrestrial species that live under leaf litter, rocks, logs and bark. These guys will prey on small skinks and lizards.

🐍 SNAKE SEASON IS ALMOST HERE🐍

With the warmer months coming up fast you will begin to see more snake activity.

What does this mean?

As the days start to become warmer snakes metabolism starts to increase, this means snake activity will increase. Around this time of the year males will out looking for a females to mate with.

There are many reasons why a snake may find itself at your house food, shelter, water, passing through to get to another part of habitat or looking for a female.

Unfortunately there is no way to 100% snake proof your yard but there are ways to make it less inviting for them to want to hang around.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?

🐍 Keep your grass short.
🐍 Remove water bowel when pets aren't outside.
🐍 Store firewood safely.
🐍 Remove debris.
🐍 Keep your yard maintained

Don't spend money on snake repellents - THEY DON'T WORK!!

Winter Is right around the Corner!!!

As it starts to cool down and winter being right around the corner, snake activity starts to decrease.

Snakes may find good warm hiding spots around your house such as rock retaining walls, under concrete slabs and roofs.

Snakes go into a state of brumation which means that their activity slows right down. During the warmer days of winter snake will come out to soak up the warmth of the sun and if there is an opportunity to eat they will take it but then will return to their hiding spot.
