🐕 THE STAND
You might be wondering… why do we teach a stand as a controlled obedience skill? 🤔
At The Canine Classroom, one of our goals is to teach dogs that standing can be their neutral, default position — not every pause needs to become an automatic sit! 😅
Teaching a reliable stand can help:
✨ Reduce those pesky auto-sits
✨ Create a useful starting position for other skills
✨ Build body awareness and control
✨ Develop confidence and relaxed compliance
✨ Make everyday handling and experiences easier
And that last one is a biggie! A solid stand can be incredibly useful for things like vet visits, grooming, being handled, waiting to cross the road or simply standing calmly while life happens around them. 🩺✂️🚦
You can introduce the stand using a lure, gentle guidance through the cradle method, or appropriate lead pressure. From there, we introduce the verbal cue and hand signal, so your dog learns exactly what we’re asking for. 🐾
Then comes the fun part: building time in position. ⏱️
Rather than simply asking for a stand and immediately releasing, we gradually teach our dogs that staying standing is part of the behaviour. We can build duration in small increments, add distractions, change our position, move around them and eventually take the skill into real-world environments.
This helps create a dog who can calmly hold their position even when something more interesting is happening! 👀🐕
Because obedience isn’t just about getting your dog to do something — it’s about building understanding, confidence and calmness that carries over into everyday life. 💛
