Health checks on this beautiful Coastal Carpet Python before release

This is are important part of my job as a snake catcher. There are many things that can affect the health of our wildlife including a deadly fungal disease that is highly contagious between snakes. Most of the time I won’t inspect a snake during the catch at someone’s property, as they’re usually very keen for the snake to be away from them, so I will do so before releasing them into the bush again.

Why did the snake cross the road?…

The Bandy-Bandy is one of the most beautiful snakes and anytime I see one I’m always in awe, as you can hear!

Please let all wildlife cross the road safely. They don’t know what a road is, except that it’s a warm place. Pretty difficult not to see this beauty but some snakes aren’t as visible!

A Golden-crowned snake displays its defensive bluff used to warn off predators when it feels threatened, a clear warning to leave it alone. These snakes are only mildly venomous and actually very reluctant to bite so it’s all a bit of a performance. It will take off as soon as it can! How stunning!

Snakes and dogs: Unfortunately interactions can happen between dogs and wild snakes. Dogs have that naturally curious nature and can easily pick up on scents of other animals which may lead them to want to interact with or chase snakes. Snakes do not see dogs as prey so their natural instinct would be to flee and defend themselves, which can end badly for either/both the snake and the dog. There are things you can do to reduce the risks. As an owner, it’s also incredibly important to know the potential signs of a snake bite in a dog, as you may not even realise it’s happened or be able to see the bite. Time is crucial, so if you ever suspect any interaction, always consult a vet immediately. Never try to catch the snake for identification, pick it up or kill it. It wastes time and puts you at unnecessary risk.

Note: This video is of my husky and my non venomous pet woma python, there was no risk here.
