Meet Peggy!

This little cutie came in as a stray after she escaped her yard. Thankfully she was microchipped and the details were up to date so we were able to reunite her with her parents.

🐾 A Tiny Microchip Can Make a BIG Difference 🐾

Imagine your pet slips through an open gate, gets frightened during a storm, or wanders further from home than expected. They can’t tell anyone their name, where they live, or who is desperately searching for them. 💔

That’s where a microchip can help bring them home. 🏡❤️

When a stray pet is brought into Aura Vet Hospital, one of the first things we do is scan them for a microchip. That tiny chip contains a unique identification number that can be linked to their owner’s registered contact details.

📱 A quick scan → a phone call → a family reunited.

Microchipping is particularly important because collars and ID tags can fall off or be removed, while a microchip provides a permanent form of identification.

But there’s one very important catch…

⚠️ A microchip is only useful if the contact details attached to it are CURRENT.

If you’ve recently:
🐾 Moved house
📞 Changed your phone number
📧 Changed your email address
👨‍👩‍👧 Taken ownership of a new pet

…make sure your pet’s microchip registration has been updated.

We regularly see the difference a microchip can make when a lost pet arrives at the clinic. There’s nothing better than making that phone call to say:

“We’ve found your pet.” ❤️

Not sure if your pet is microchipped or whether their chip can be detected? Ask our team at your next visit — we’re happy to give them a quick scan.

🐶🐱 Microchip them. Keep the details updated. Give them the best chance of finding their way home.

Meet Sally!
This beautiful girl was in for her vaccinations.

🐾💛 Sally’s Adventures at the Vet! 💛🐾

Meet gorgeous Sally, a 12-week-old Labrador puppy who recently visited us at Aura Veterinary Hospital for her vaccination. 💉🐶

For Sally, a trip to the vet isn’t just about getting her vaccination—it’s an adventure! 🥰

At this important age, we want puppies to learn that visiting the vet can be a safe, happy and positive experience. Sally had plenty of time to explore, investigate all the interesting smells, meet the team and, of course, enjoy some very important puppy treats! 🦴

These early positive visits can make such a difference as puppies grow, helping build confidence and reducing fear, anxiety and stress around future veterinary care.

Sally handled her vaccination like a little superstar ⭐ and we absolutely loved having her visit.

We can’t wait to watch you grow, Sally! 💛🐾

Sunday snacks for dogs! Homemade!

These are particularly handy for training, enrichment toys or hiding medications.

🐾 Chicken & Pumpkin Protein Balls

Ingredients

* 500 g lean chicken mince
* 1 egg
* ½ cup cooked, mashed pumpkin
* ½ cup rolled oats, finely ground
* 2 tbsp natural xylitol-free peanut butter
* 1 tbsp chia seeds — optional

Method

1. Preheat oven to 180°C.
2. Combine all ingredients thoroughly.
3. Roll into small balls — around 1–2 cm is plenty for most dogs.
4. Place on a lined baking tray.
5. Bake for approximately 15–20 minutes, or until completely cooked through.
6. Allow to cool before serving.

🥩 Beef version

Swap the chicken mince for lean beef or turkey mince. You can also replace the pumpkin with cooked sweet potato.

❄️ No-bake option

For something even easier, combine:

* 1 cup cooked, shredded chicken
* ½ cup mashed pumpkin
* ½ cup finely ground oats
* 2 tbsp xylitol-free peanut butter

Roll into small balls and refrigerate. Because these contain cooked meat and no preservatives, keep refrigerated and use within 2–3 days, or freeze individual portions.

Tip: Make them quite small. They’re calorie-dense treats, so a marble-sized ball is usually enough, particularly for training.

Avoid xylitol/birch sugar, chocolate, raisins/grapes, macadamias, onion, garlic and excessive salt.

Dental facts for cats and dogs!

* 🦷 Periodontal disease is one of the most common health problems in dogs and cats.

* By 3 years of age, most dogs and cats have some degree of periodontal disease. The commonly cited figure is over 80% of dogs and around 70% of cats, although estimates vary between studies and how dental disease is diagnosed.

* Dental disease can begin well before owners notice obvious signs. Pets frequently continue eating despite significant oral pain.

* Small and toy-breed dogs are particularly susceptible to periodontal disease and may develop clinically important disease at a younger age.

* In cats, periodontal disease is common, but tooth resorption is another major source of dental pain. Studies have reported tooth resorption in roughly 30–70% of cats, with prevalence increasing with age and depending on the population examined.

* Dental X-rays are important: a substantial proportion of each tooth lies below the gumline, so significant disease—including root disease and feline tooth resorption—may not be visible during an examination of the mouth alone.

* Periodontal disease is caused by plaque-associated inflammation that progresses from gingivitis to destruction of the periodontal ligament and supporting bone, potentially resulting in infection, pain and tooth loss.

* Bad breath isn’t considered normal and is one of the most common early signs owners notice.

* Regular veterinary dental examinations, home dental care and professional treatment when indicated can help prevent progression and preserve comfortable, functional teeth.

🐱💙 Aura Vet Hospital is a Silver Accredited Cat Friendly Clinic! 💙🐱

We’re proud to hold Silver Cat Friendly Clinic Accreditation, recognising the steps we take to make veterinary visits calmer, safer and less stressful for our feline patients. 🐾

Cats experience the veterinary environment very differently from dogs, which is why we’ve designed our approach with their unique needs in mind.

At Aura, our cat-friendly care includes:

🐱 A dedicated cat-only waiting area with visual barriers to reduce contact with dogs
🌿 Feline pheromones used throughout appropriate areas of the hospital
🏥 A dedicated feline hospital ward away from our canine patients
🤍 Gentle, cat-friendly handling techniques designed to minimise fear, anxiety and stress
🩺 Staff trained to recognise subtle signs of stress and adjust our approach accordingly
🧺 Encouraging familiar bedding, carriers and other strategies that help cats feel more secure
👩‍⚕️ A dedicated Cat Advocate helping us maintain and continually improve our feline-friendly standards

Being a Cat Friendly Clinic isn’t just about having a separate space for cats—it’s about understanding how cats think, communicate and respond to unfamiliar environments, and adapting their veterinary care around those needs.

We know that bringing your cat to the vet can sometimes be stressful for both you and your cat. Our goal is to make every visit as calm, positive and comfortable as possible. 💙

🐾 Because cats deserve veterinary care designed with cats in mind.
