Emma & Jon with their dog Max has just wrapped up their end of reactivity program, here's what they have to say ❤️

Reactive dog? Feeling like you’ve tried everything?

These are the dogs from our previous intake, and the difference speaks for itself.

Many came to us struggling with barking, lunging, pulling, fixating on other dogs, or becoming completely overwhelmed on walks. For some owners, walking had become stressful enough that they were avoiding certain areas, crossing the road whenever they saw another dog, or barely walking at all.

They’d watched the YouTube videos, tried different training techniques, avoided triggers, changed equipment and done their best to manage the behaviour… but still felt stuck.

Fast forward to now, and many of these same dogs are calmly walking around other dogs, enjoying the world again, and some have even progressed onto our regular pack walks.

If you have a reactive dog and you’re starting to feel like you don’t know what else to try, we’d love to have a chat.

We offer a free phone consultation where we can learn a little more about your dog, what you’re currently struggling with, and discuss what options may be available to help.

Most reactive dog owners aren't lacking effort.

In fact, they're usually the ones trying the hardest.

Watching YouTube videos.
Trying different methods.
Buying new tools.
Crossing the road.
Avoiding dogs.
Scanning every environment before they leave the house.

The problem usually isn't effort.

It's a lack of clarity, consistency, and feedback.

Your dog doesn't come with an instruction manual, and when you're only getting feedback from your dog, it can be hard to know if you're making progress or accidentally making things worse.

That's why we exist.

We've been where you may be today. Feeling stuck, frustrated, and unsure what to do next.

We know what works, what doesn't, and how to progress both you and your dog at a pace that feels comfortable and safe.

We have the dogs, the experience, and the systems to create successful training scenarios so you can stop avoiding the world and start enjoying it again.

Most importantly, we know how to help you reach your goals.

The type of socialization you rarely see nowadays.

When most people think of socialization, they picture dogs running around, chasing each other, wrestling, and playing nonstop.

Then they wonder why their dog loses its mind every time it sees another dog.

If every interaction your dog has with other dogs is excitement, play, and chaos, that's what they'll start expecting. So imagine how frustrating it is for them when they're suddenly told they can't run over and say hello.

At Mutt Magic, we put a huge focus on calm coexistence.

Dogs learning to be around other dogs without needing to interact. Exploring the environment. Relaxing. Listening. Making good decisions.

We want our dogs to understand that seeing another dog doesn't automatically mean playtime.

First comes engagement, neutrality, and trust.

Freedom is earned, not just given.

And when dogs learn that, they gain something far more valuable than play — the ability to be calm and confident anywhere.

This dog started exactly where most dogs do.

Pulling, pacing, whining, unable to settle.

Instead of constantly correcting him, distracting him, or entertaining him, we simply waited.

The tether removed his ability to make poor choices and taught him that calmness is what earns rewards.

The moment he offered behaviours we wanted—such as a sit, a down, relaxing his body, or simply choosing to do nothing—he was rewarded with praise, food, or freedom from the tether.

Over time, he learnt an important lesson:
Calm behaviour makes good things happen.

Tethering is a powerful tool because it teaches dogs how to regulate themselves without needing constant input from us.

Many dogs have never been taught how to settle. They're always moving, always seeking stimulation, and always looking for the next thing to do.

By safely tethering them and rewarding calm choices, we create clarity, build impulse control, and teach them how to relax in the real world.
The goal isn't to force a dog to be calm.
The goal is for the dog to discover that calmness is worth choosing.
And once that lesson clicks, everything else becomes easier. 🐾

Once your dog understands loose lead walking without distractions, it's time to add the next layer. (Watch previous video on how to start teaching loose lead, don't skip this!!)

The distraction you choose is important. If your dog is reactive to dogs or people, don't use them yet. Instead, start with things like food, toys, or interesting smells.

The exercise stays the same. The moment your dog passes your leg, simply change direction and keep moving. Let the lead do the work for you. No need to stop, negotiate, or say commands.

By staying with their owner, the dog also earns opportunities for rewards. This builds value in the handler and teaches the dog that paying attention and staying connected is what makes good things happen.

Over time, your dog will start checking in more, paying closer attention to you, and respecting the lead because they learn that a loose lead is what gets them access to the things they want. 🐾

Follow along to see how we then progress to working around triggers.

Our most extreme reactivity cases.

These are dogs who once couldn’t walk past another dog without barking, lunging, screaming, shutting down, or completely losing control on walks. Dogs whose owners felt like they had tried everything, avoided walks, or constantly felt stressed taking them out in public.

Our Reactivity Program is designed specifically for dogs struggling with reactivity. We focus on changing the emotional response behind the behaviour so you get lasting results. Through structured exposure, real-world training, calm coexistence, clear communication, and controlled setups with neutral helper dogs, we help dogs learn how to regulate their emotions and make better decisions around triggers.

Every program is tailored to the individual dog, and we work closely with owners throughout the process so the results carry over into everyday life — not just training sessions.

We’re so confident in the program that if you don’t see results, we’ll give your money back.
